Backups for Fischer DBA-02

Thread Starter

I am definitely in the Fischer DBA-02 fan club these days. Got a pair from Ethan's second batch in early June, and have used them as much as possible ever since. So now I'm thinking about what to use as a backup if something should happen to these while I'm waiting for more to arrive from Russia. I am NOT inclined to use different IEMs for different music, and haven't found ANY SQ deficiencies with these Fischers. My thoughts:

1. Bite the bullet now and order a second set of DBA-02's at Ethan's sale price.

2. Panasonic HJE900, which have been described as very similar to DBA-02 with more bass (with foam in the nozzle and/or Comply tips to calm the treble). Basically the same cost as Option 1, but with a slightly different sound sig and robust build quality.

3. Hippo Shroom EB. Have any DBA-02 users also heard these? Is there any likelihood of a Shroom-i EB (smart phone compatible) version?

4. Any info about the ETA for the Maximo iM-790/795?

My other current IEMs are in my sig, but none get any listening time any more since their sound sigs are much too colored and less satisfying after the DBA's.

Too bad that Fischer doesn't do a mic/remote version of the DBA-02 - that would be my "perfect" IEM. Yes, I've tried the Shure Phone Adapter, but that's pretty awkward compared to something integrated like the NE-7M or M9P.

I would say the Westone 2. I had the DBA-02 and sold it because of comfort issues. They both sound neutral but the major difference I noticed was that the sounstage was larger and better with the W2, but 3-D imaging was better with the DBA-02.

You make me want to hear the W2 :)

A backup pair is typically cheaper than the main pair I'm assuming although in my case there may be exceptions. If you don't want to spend more than the $150 or so for the DBA02 your options are quite limited but if you don't mind spending more (which might not make as much sense for a backup) you are increase your options.

I'd probably just get a 2nd pair of the DBA02 if you want the same sound signature since imo there really aren't that many phones that deliver neutrality at cheaper price ranges. PFE is the only one that might come to mind but I've never heard it so I can't say for sure.

You have more Fischer IEMs currently en route?

Hope you get a chance to listen to them one of these days. I agree with your monetary backup assessment. The W2 is $100 more than the DBA-02! For the sound, the price difference is unjustifiable even if you include all of the extra accessories that Westone throws in. But if money is not an issue...

Time for me to check in, since dfrost knows I bought a second pair of DBAs as my backup. I owned the W2s for a brief period (and the W3s and UM3X as well), and I didn't feel they were worth the price. At first, I liked them enough, but they didn't hold up to the CK10s, my next IEM. I even had the UM56s to use with the W2s, but still could not justify the price. In my view, the so-called top tier universal IEMs are way overpriced, since the price gap between them and some of the newer arrivals (DBA, DDM, RE-Zero) is nowhere near the performance gap. Of course, in my case, I favor the DBAs over the SM3s and all the other expensive IEM's I've owned and sold.

Anyway, for a less expensive backup, I am not sure where to go. I would say get a pair of ADDIEMs, which can be had for $35 (not knockoffs either) and are also dual drivers with the iPhone/Touch angle covered. I actually really like the ADDIEMs, and just use a little bass boost via EQ on them to sound their best. That's what I would consider a backup. I have two pair of them as well, in fact (my wife and daughter both use ADDIEMs with their Touches, so I have two more pair just in case). To me, the ADDIEMs at the ebay price are in the same performance to price league as the DBAs. At $79, not so much.

Is it an option to just wait til they get eaten by a bear or dropped in a blender or whatever, and then get new pair?

Sure, just not my option.

Who are you referring to? Although I'm not one who usually has multiples of the same earphone so unless they decide to make something better than the DBA02 I won't be getting another one.

It's nice to have backups however. I had someone repair my e-Q7 and during that time I was using my Coppers I believe so wasn't stuck with my PL30 which I don't use for music anyway :)

I was referring to the fellow who this thread is about, dfrost. He said "while I'm waiting for more to arrive from Russia." I thought that implied he had some on the way. Not that it mattered, just curious.

I think he (dfrost) meant DBAs, which are due to arrive soon to Budgen Audio.

RE0, RE-Zero, PFE112, Image X5, ER4P/S, SA6, ER6i.........

ahh okie dokes. The type of positive reactions the DBA has been inspiring makes them really intriguing.

I am not ashamed to say I love these IEMs. They just work for me.

There is no shame in loving the iems that you prefer. After all, I've listened to/owned many iems and want to figure out which one is the most suitable for me. I beleive someone has to really give a listen to them extensively to make a decision on whether they love them or not. I really liked the sound of the DBA-02 but it is unfortunate that I had comfort issues. Maybe I should have gotten them remolded?
