why does it matter what voltage your have on a DAC

As titled. I was looking at a DacMagic, which i plan on buying but it is 220 volts. I know they have 110 volts, but why does it matter?

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Because the 220V version cannot be plugged into the wall in your house, unless you live in Europe or parts of the far east on 220V. Most of the Americas are on 110V, as the US is.

You can buy a transformer that will convert 110V to 220V so you can run the DAC. You might be able to have an electrician rewire a socket to 220V, as well.

The DacMagic runs on 12v. In the US it comes with an external transformer that reduces your 110v house current to 12v. In some parts of the world the Transformer reduces 220v.

Because if the unit is:

* 110v and you plug it into a 220v it will blow up.

* 220v and you plug it into a 110v outlet it will not power up.

Will it really blow up? also shouldn't it be the other way around?

"Blow up" may not be the right words, but I guess you understand what I meant. It will most certainly stress and destroy crucial components in the DAC and render it useless. With some luck it may be saved by an eventual built in fuse, but probably not worth testing.

I do not see how it could be the other way around. Please explain.

DM has an external PSU. Contact CA, tell them you have one of those faulty PSUs and you will get a new one free of charge (don't forget to state you need the US 3 pin plug).

The point is that he must have a version that comes with a power supply suited for 110 V.
