that list of bestsellers is actually pretty encouraging.

she & him, broken bells, the national.

i'm not sure the list is accurate.  probably tweaked to create exposure for certain artists.

there's no way Ke$ha and Lady GaGa wouldn't be at the top, along with justin beiber, etc.

or, it could be that their fans download digitally, so the list reflects people buying physical product (serious about music)...

thanks for the thread.  interesting...

I certainly would have expected much worse. Especially from the classical list.

Then again, I wonder what the demographic is for people who still actually pay for their music....

Excellent point, Drosera. One of my major complaints with Big Music is that they, seemingly, put 90% of their resources towards producing music for an audience who won't pay for a CD. Then they wring their hands and moan about piracy, instead of gearing their products towards the audience who still pays for music. Maybe I'm missing something, like concert and t-shirt revenue, but I don't see much financial reason to keep pushing crap on teens (and no offense to the teens here - you are different) who download and copy. I really wish they'd serve up the pap in lo-fi MP3, give it away, and leave the recordings to audiophiles and music geeks. They should take up SACD, DVD-A and BluRay audio for a more expensive product aimed at those of us who will buy something.

instead, they resort to cheap tricks like throwing previously released product into a box, and selling it for an arm and a leg.

I would disagree.  There are a lot of great albums on that list.  Obviously there are some crap albums on it (twilight soundtrack, kesha and eminem come to mind) but albums like The National, Spoon, New Pornographers, Peter Gabriel, The Black Keys, James Taylor, Vampire Weekend, Jack Johnson and She & Him are great artists.  I'm less disgusted than I was expecting.  Hooray for no Lady Gaga!

You're missing legal download revenue. Point taken however, although I'd love to see some numbers to back it up. Really, to add another generalization to the above, adults don't buy music like kids. They have busier lives, bills to pay etc. Sure there are exceptions like some here, but do they add up enough to justify a product and marketing push?

I would like to read some inside baseball on this stuff.

I agree. No way Ke$ha, Justin Beiber, and Lady Gaga aren't the top 3 or 4. This seems like it was doctored by sponsored bands. The only things that seem believable are the Glee soundtracks, honestly.

And Zarathustra, unless you've heard the new Eminem, don't even think about lumping that album in with Justin Beiber, Ke$ha, and Twilight. It is a brilliant piece of Hip Hop that anyone can appreciate if they pull their head out of their ass and open their ears to what he has to say.

Interesting.  I'm so completely out of the loop of pop music.   From their top 50 sellers I own 4.  From the list of best songs I actually only am familiar with 3 of the artists.  I've probably purchased about 40 new and used CD's this year so far over a wide variety of genres (though obviously not many that fit into popular music).

The list is "Best Selling Albums", I suspect Ke$ha, Justin Beiber and Lady Gaga fans don't buy albums, they download tracks.

I love eminem but recovery seriously sucked. a little better than relapse but hardly difficult to top that pos; this is coming from a fan that even liked encore.

I dont think you've heard the twilight album either... As much as I like hating on Twilight as the next guy, I have to admit they managed to put together a pretty good album of exclusive singles consisting of: Bon Iver+St.Vincent, Beck+Bat for Lashes (@$#ing beautiful song), thom yorke (I thought you were better than this Thom :[ ), Vampire Weekend, Battles, grizzly bear, band of horses, florence and the machine, metric, the dead weathers (how the hell did they get jack white to sell out???), lupe fiasco (just lost any street cred he had lol).  But seriously this was a really impressive album and I guess any exposure is good even if twilight fans are retarded.

I find it funny that 2 of the artists you like made exclusive singles for the twilight album. :]

For comparison I looked up the Mid-year Billboard 200 (USA) here.

The top ten if you don't wish to click through:

1. Need You Now - Lady Antebellum

2. My World 2.0 - Justine Haircut

3. Soldier of Love - Sade

4. The Fame - Lady Gaga

5. Recovery - Eminem

6. Raymond V. Raymond - Usher

7. The E.N.D. - The Black Eyed Peas

8. Animal - Ke$ha

9. My World - Justin Haricut

10. Thank Me Later - Drake

that looks a little more realistic...  and sad.
