Any guy who goes off his meds to make music is ok in my book. Strapping Young Lad's City is, parody or not, an essential metal album and I dare someone to name a more ridiculously entertaining concept album than Ziltoid the Omniscient.
As for me, I take things album by album and generally don't choose "favorite artists/musicians/bands/whatever." However, Einstürzende Neubauten has a catalog of music that I find myself revisiting often and I'm hard pressed to name a discography as expansive and of similar quality. I also credit them as the band that ignited my passion for music. Not far behind is the collective works of J.G. Thirlwell. (the various Foetus projects, Steroid Maximus, Manorexia, etc.) A more recent addition (mid-00s) that I could confidently say has a near-perfect body of work would be Grails.
