ADC recommendations? (DAC, too.)

I've got a project that I'm trying to select an ADC for, and I'm wondering what the cream-of-the-crop stuff is these days. I'll potentially be using a number of 'em, so it'd be nice if they weren't insanely pricey. They do need to be of very high quality, but I don't need them to be made from the dust of angels' wings. Any ideas?

I also need to choose a DAC for this project, and cost is less of an object on this one. Obviously more info on DACs is readily available, but do the wise among you have any good suggestions?

Thanks!

I have been curious about ADC chips as well.

ADC design is not something I've seen much of on this forum before.  diyAudio may be a better bet. I have no idea how they work, but I do know that the PCM2902 (and series) are ADC with SPDIF/USB outputs.

For the DAC side of the equation, it would depend upon what signal source you were feeding it and how complex you wanted to make it.  The Wolfson WM8524 (in my grubDAC design) and the WM8501 (in the gamma1) create quite good sound without needing alot of extra work if you have the right input data stream.

check discussions of "prosumer" soundcard internals, or just look at Analog Devices, TI, AKM and Cirrus Crystal division audio ADC pages for their better parts
