It also depends which encoders you are using for MP3 and AAC

All conversions to MP3 and AAC were done using iTunes on a Mac G4.

Yeah, I don't remember what they use for their MP3 encoder, may want to try lame some time, just for giggles. But again at 320k, I don't think it will make huge difference.

It is a shame that, considering everyone seems to regard lame as very good, that the name does not do it justice

I will certainly give lame a go and see how it compares.

True, but it has shined well beyond it's name.

iTunes' built-in MP3 encoder isn't one of the better ones anymore, so AAC will indeed sound better at higher bitrates. But if you use one of the better MP3 encoders out there, they'll generally be better than AAC at higher bitrates.

I don't want to sound like I'm coming down too hard on this but I find it extremely difficult to believe that 320kps aac on the Ipod would sound better than lossless flac on the Karma, especially when the Karma has a better equalizer. Also, why don't you compare 320kps AAC to 320kps Ogg on the IHP too?

Not that I don't like the Ipod, I'm in constant envy of my friend's 2nd gen but one of the strongest selling points of the Karma is that it has lossless playback(at least to me).

Well, one could argue that the Karma needs a better equalizer (Seriously, the iPod's response pretty flat, and I prefer my music EQ-free.)

That being said, as I wrote above, I agree with you on the AAC issue.

I wonder how much lossless play impacts battery life though.

Agreed...for those of us looking for flat response, a good eq isn't a selling point (imho)

Depends on the "lossless" format. If it's a "lossless compression" format, then it shouldn't affect battery life too much. On the other hand, if you're talking about uncompressed audio (which is by definition lossless), then you're looking at significantly shorter battery life.

Well in this case flac, as opposed to WAV. a flac is about 70% of the size of the original WAV. So, I'd imagine it is better, but still not as food as say MP3 for battery life. Of course you could say the same for higher bitrate MP3's. It's finding the compromise that you can live with.
