Can you hear the difference between Lossless and 320kb/s? - Page 3

Depends on the recording for me, besides any differences are very very slight(most people won't notice or care unless you tell them).  Still I have all the hard drive space in the world, no reason for me not to FLAC/WAV/ALAC/TAK/APE

Flash players and youtube on the other hand are usually compressed to all heck and sound pretty bad in comparison.  even if youtube says 250kbps/320kbps they do something to their audio.

In my own head, I think I can tell the difference.. Perhaps it's easier for those with more expensive equipment.

Ok, I have to get to the bottom of this.

I will do some tests on my stereo, I will add some samples in lossless and 320kb/s, burn them on CD and play it from there, should be a good way to blindtest it, I have 5000$ stereo, should be able to reveal any difference.

^ Your gear won't mean anything if your ears can't hear above 16~kHz.

My hearing is fine.

Well, I did some more testing last night, I tried 3 more high quality recordings of different kind of music, 2 out of 3 I still couldn't tell a difference, but the 3rd file, I could hear a difference in the treble, as the compression really took some details away, it was very subtle and my wife couldn't hear it, but I sure could, everytime in a blindtest, so yes, on a good home stereo, there's a difference, but it depends on the music, and the difference is so small, that "normal, not hifi interested" people would not care.

Difference or Not.  Is the music still enjoyable?

There are plenty of older recordings that actually sound like crap, but the music is awesome.

SQ only matters with good music imo, and paradoxically good music doesn't necessarily need the best sound quality to be enjoyable.

Even still, any "difference" will be minute...less than that of changing a wire [IC, speaker, power cable], tube, or opamp.

Furthermore, since everyones room and gear are different its not likely that everyone will have the same results unless the difference is glaring.  I have heard two exact same PC's playing the same music in difference set-ups that sound different.  In fact the set-up I have in my office sounds different when I move it to my upstairs listening room.

But then I guess its always fun to quibble over small things....enjoy!

That sounds like cables make a audible difference, which they usually don't.. but I don't want to derail this thread. :)

LOL.....Okay actually nothing makes an audible difference, its all placebo....people hear what they expect

That statement should make you happy...<-----he is listening to Lossless.....he is listening to 320kb/s--->

But ummm, I can see from your moniker that you are not so concerned about clarity.

I agree that any differences real or not doesn't make much a difference.  But if you have the space, peace of mind ect ect
