Turntable Cartridge Replacement

Thread Starter

Hello All,

I have a Technics SL-BD20D Semiautomatic Turntable with a P34 Cartridge. According to everything I was able to find, this is a standard P-Mount cartridge, and thus, to my understanding, can be replaced with most any standard P-Mount cartridge. After much research, I purchased the Grado Prestige Blue Cartridge which is a universal S/P Mount.

To my dismay, when I went to attach the Grado Cartridge it didn't fit. Upon closer investigation, there seemed to be an extension on the back of the P34 Cartridge that allowed it to extend the contact points further into the tonearm. After this realization, I looked for the manual to my turntable and found that my cartridge is actually the P-34 T4D.

Does anyone know if there is an adapter that must be purchased to fit this tonearm (T4D)? Has anyone ran into a similar situation with P-Mount turntables? Any information would be greatly appreciated as I am at a loss and have no means of listening to my vinyls :(

Thanks!

I'm not sure, but you might want to look around at Garage-a-Records and the Needledoctor. They're pretty knowledgeable and, hopefully, will have a solution.

If you come up empty, take some pics and start a thread in the DIY section. I'm sure one of the regulars there would be able to think of a solution.

I can vouch for the nedledoctor as well. I have had several phone conversations with Brian there and he has helped me out quite a bit.

I recently bought a Denon 103 cartridge from him and the price was great and now I buy all my little accessories from him as well (stylus cleaner, mofi sleeves, record washer, etc.). I tend to be very loyal to business that offer a real value added proposistion to what they offer and I can say the needledoctor does that.

JasonLivingston, It's been yrs since I've used P-mounts but are you saying that the "Pins" on your new cart. aren't long enough to reach your tonearm pins??   Now If your tonearm end has pins also could you possibly use some cartridge tags to connect the arm pins to your new cartridge pins????     Like I said it's been years so I do forget if your arms "Pins" are female that are suppose to except your new cartridge male pins, ......Maybe someone can give you some more help....If you just bought this cart. from a dealer (like needle doctor, etc) they should take it back for an exchange.........sorry I couldn't be of more help....Hope you get things worked out.........Don't be afraid to ask question!!!!
