Help needed with LD mkV and low impedance headphones - Page 5

thanks for the feedback KBI! Like you always told me the modern dt48 probably has better lows than my vintage one. If you listened with my set up I think you would find the roll off pretty severe...certainly it's so compared to the v6 and the dt250. I really do miss the lower bass with a lot of tunes, but with others not so much. I still enjoy the way they do vocals. Nat and Natalie Cole sound unbelievable with the dt48...and John Lennon, Norah Jones, Frank Sinatra to name a few others. Maybe because they were designed originally for accuracy with spoken word?? Well they really DO sound accurate to my ears, FWIW. Hopefully shamu will have a listen and let us know if there's severe roll off with the Lavry. Glad you liked the tune!

I was suprised how much the volume played a roll in the bass. Never really noticed such a dramatic change with my set up..But straight from the comp.. Really noticeable. I might burn the song onto a disc & play it on my set up to get a better picture & better idea of the bass.. I know the roll off was pretty significant with my modern DT48, so, yeah, probably more so with the vintage.. You really need to go to meets & get a 100/120 ohm adapter.. That ohm seems to work best for the DT48's bass.. Least holds true for the DT48 8ohm I bought from Nikon..

True about the volume.... I'm glad someone pointed that out about the Fletcher Munsen effect, or whatever it's called. The mid bass comes up to DF levels or close to it, when I turn the volume up. But the low bass is still lacking. For sure I want to try the 100 ohm adapter before investing money in another amp. According to another forum member, the dt48 was designed to work best plugged into a 120 ohm output impedance.

With my Foobar->optical->custom DAC/AMP->DT48, the two 5 sec hits definitely sound bassy.  The hits throughout don't have a ton of impact, but they are definitely there and deep enough.

Thanks joelpearce! Maybe they're not as bass light as I've been told. The dt48 with the emu 0404 and the mkV amp IS bass light though. Still have no definitive answer on why I get so much bass roll off. Shamu had the same problem with the LD mkIII, but the bass came back with the Lavry. I guess there's still hope to improve the bass of mine.

Hi lejaz, can I suggest something different?

With your amp (and I use to own it) I would use a HD650: OK, they're not dead neutral, at all, but you have already a pair of 2 good flat headphones (AKGs). The HD650 are funny, highly involving, and not bass light :-D And they're a very good match with the MKV

IMHO, they're a good choice with jazz, because of their warm and 'smoky' attitude.

I wouldn't call the 70# flat..

Don't let Acix hear you say that though I would agree. Thanks for the suggestion realmassy. I would love to hear the 650's one day, but for now I am pretty infatuated with the way the dt48 does the midrange and don't want to part with them. I just love the way they put such a clear focused lens on the mids. I may sell the 702 one day, and if I do I might like to try one of the sennheiser 6XX's. For now I'll probably look for a better amp for the dt48 that won't break my budget.

If you can get better bass out of the DT48 I see you selling your 702, not a slight against the 702, but my opinion.. I did like the 701 by the way.. The 650 mid range is also very good but in the opposite direction.. Warm, rich, full, & I'd put emotionally inclined to seduce the listener.. The 340 does this even better IMO..

Getting the transformer based impedance adapter soon. Keeping my fingers crossed. My friend claims it will be a lot better than the resister based one. I'll probably sell the 702 eventually since the mids just don't sound right to my ears. I a/b'd them last night with the dt250 and they were very different. I prefer the dt250, the dt48, and the DF mids, over the 702 mids. The dt250 was compared very favorably with a good studio monitor speaker in Sound on Sound's review of them, FWIW. Maybe I'm nuts, but some of my favorite songs just lose something in the mids with the 702.

Hi lejaz, can you tell me where to order a transformer based impedance adapter from: using DT48e 200 ohm with LDMKIII - thank you.

200r is not low impedance. it is high impedance.

Cinemag, jensen, sowter, and edcor all make 600:150ohm transformers or transformers that can be wired as such VERY easily. With a 600ohm (or so, tune to taste) resistor in parallel with the 200ohm cans it should be about right.

Its still not going to change the sound of the headphones.

This question came to me after this thread slowed down:

For the question that is more or less the topic of this thread (is the LD-V adequate for driving low impedance headphones?) were the headphones used with the 300 ohm cable or not? If they were generally used with the 300ohm cable, the LD-V was driving ~300 ohms, which is certainly a high impedance. It is very rare for people with sennheiser HD600/650/800 to complain that the LD-V cant drive them.

My friend made mine for me. He's a retired electrician. Don't know that you'll need one with the 200ohm dt48. It's the 25ohm model that has severe bass roll off with the LD mkIII, FWIR.

Yes, but even if the LD mkV should drive easily a 200 ohms loads, the DT48 were designed with a 120 ohms source impedance in mind. So adding an impedance adapter should bring the sound closer to what it was originally intended.

I would bet that Lundahl also makes a suitable transformer.

If you ask electraprint nicely he probably would too.

If you asked really nicely Edcor or Electraprint would probably wind 600:200ohm transformers.
