Grado Jumbo Pads on 225s, Any Cons?

They are apparently much more comfortable, but I was wondering if there was any drawback to them on the 225s. They appear to only put them on their highest end cans, so are the 225s not powerful enough or something?

Thanks,

Patrick

The more distance you put between your ear and the driver, the less bass and the more treble they'll have. You'll also have to increase the volume a little, but I don't think that'll matter with Grados. The high-end models are designed specifically for use with the jumbos. Probably if you put bowls on them, they'd be bassier and warmer than the lower models.

The only model that seems almost universally enjoyed with alternative pads is the RS1 and flats. And many like the HF2 with jumbos, but it's more balanced than the 225i.

I agree with Head Injury... I have tried the jumbos on my 325i's and when I put them on I have to turn the volume up.  The soundstage does improve (wider) but the treble is even more prominent.  The midrange loses it's Grado punch as well.  They are not my first choice for pads, even with the tape mod.  I prefer the standard bowls.

It is fun to try different pads, I rotate the bowls, the Sennheiser HD414 pads and the jumbos.

The main concern is comfort. The standard bowls are rather uncomfortable for me after an hour or so...

EQ can be used to decrease treble.  So maybe EQ in combination with the jumbo pads would work?

Have you washed your bowls yet??  There are threads where owners describe how they wash the bowls with shampoo, by hand, and others that put them in their washing machine with fabric softener and an article of clothing through the holes (keeps them from floating to the top).  Either way they will soften up and become less irritating to your ears.

I washed them with shampoo by hand. It's mainly my slightly large ears contacting the drivers, so I think the additional space that the Jumbos provide may help.

I use them on my 325's mostly for comfort but with a good amp and a little eq-ing it sounds fine. I only had the Comfies when I got them so compared to them, to my ears, it seemed to mellow out the treble and mids. This in turn made the bass more distinguishable for me.

But the key is I can wear them for hours unlike with any other pads.

Mellowing out the treble and mids, with warmer bass, better comfort, and wider soundtage may make these adequate orchestral cans, and may even stave off my purchase of DT990s.
