It's not the Phones, it's the song...

Occasionally you run accross a song that seems to have been improperly recorded. No matter what equipment you use to listen to it, it becomes distorted or breaks up at the same spot. Then you realize: it's not my equipment, it's just that the recording engineer dropepd the ball.

I can think of two tunes at the moment:

1) The Animals: House of the Rising Sun.

At the very end of the song, the very last note, the organ just falls apart. It's like listening to a bowl of rice-crispies snap, crackle, pop!

2) Led Zeppelin: Stairway to Heaven

No matter how I listen to this song, no matter what the equipment, I find some audible distortion in the moments immediately preceeding the guitar solo. I used to think it was just the crappy headphones I was using, but nothing I try allows me to eliminate the crackle. So I think it's gotta be the recording itself.

Any more examples?

Every modern rock song.

sometimes, particularly with early rock, it is intentional.

listen to the distorted drums in "whole lotta love" when the song comes back in at 3:05.

intentional use of distortion.

but, with most modern rock, it's a bi-product of the loudness war.  and the bane of our existence as audiophiles...

Perhaps not coincidentally I hear a fair bit of distortion on "Going to California" from Led Zep IV.  The bit where Robert sings "jet plane" at around 1:09 is an obvious example.  First time I heard it I did think it was a problem with the headphones, but I can hear it regardless of what I'm listening with.  Did bug me at first, but I'm not that bothered by it any more.
