At least they'll have 240GB. Buy a HiFiMAN and an amp, and you'll be over $1000 without all that storage, and be left to buy SD cards. I don't know how big of a sound difference there is between them, though.

Why would you need to amp the HifiMan? The only reason most people amp the HifiMan is because they have a balanced IEM. You can't plug the balanced IEM into the HifiMan, you can only plug into the RSA Protector.

I loved the HifiMan's sound a lot better than the iMod sound (which is still great) when I tried them at Can Jam.

BTW, if anyone is suggesting the OP use SD Cards, why not get the Cowon D2+ (SD Card), S:Flo 2 (MicroSD), or the Cowon J3 (MicroSD). All of these are excellent sounding DAPs and have expandable memory.

Correct, you do not need an external amp w/ the HiFiMAN HM-801. Although if you so wish you can via the line out.

Has anyone tried the streaming-from-their-desktop-to-their-phone applications? I know there's an Android option and I'm pretty sure there's an iPhone option. Not the audiophile ideal but is it even acceptable sound quality? That would give you theoretically unlimited storage.

I've began my music experience from atrac3plus 64kbps as well (though on NW-HD5), and from my experience i can tell:
1) Don't look at ipod video;
2) Zune 80/120 is okay if you will feed it with something like at least AAC 160kbps, produced directly from lossless/cds (not mp3s of course).
3) Kenwood HD60GD9 is great, but its format support is somewhat lame (e.g. it will play AAC files produced by itunes, but will refuse to play AAC files produced by NeroAAC from foobar, no matter whether they are VBR or CBR).
4) If you like your sony sound; and if you already have your collection in atrac3plus - you should look at sony nw-a847 (64gb), it does support atrac3plus, it does support drag&drop, and the capacity is quite good.

No, I have the non-Android one. I wont argue the SQ is not the best and by no means is as good as my Sony MZ-RH10 Minidisc player, but it doesn't sound bad.  I ran all my mp3s through mp3 doctor to tweak to a bit more of a Sony type sound (bit more treble and bass)  and I'm  happy with it. To be honest though, if I'm really going to sit and listen to music I still reach for my Sony with a RSA hornet and my 530s. You're right on the lack of cometition regarding large capacity  HDD players, and while the Archos is not an audiophile machine, my solution stisfies my ears.  And damn does this play video well!
