Portable for Massive Collection

Thread Starter

I have a massive collection of music that I would love to take to work.. but I feel like I would need to take a suitcase of players with me.

Currently I own a Sony A806 which has 4gb of memory and it sounds absolutely amazing.. but I have to constantly change the music due to whichever craving I have. As you know, sonicstage takes quite awhile to transfer music sometimes, and it is difficult to set up 20 or more albums at a time. Since I have recently collected somewhat 4 digits worth of cds, a 4 gig player just does not work anymore. I need something big.. bigger than an Ipod 160 gig (which I believe still sound terrible compared to my sony, even with 64kb atrac3!.. my taste is this sort of quality).

So what should I use? Is there anything that can hold an absolutely insane amount of music and play with decent SQ? I feel like I need to tether a hard drive to an old laptop, but that is just too ridiculous.

You need to get your hands on a 5th or 5.5 Gen iPod (60 or 80 GB version). Then you have to upgrade the hard drive with a 240 GB version. You can also Rockbox this iPod. This is probably the best you can get for SQ and Size. You can also have this iPod iModded/DIYModded for even better SQ.

If you want Size over SQ, then you should go for an Archos 5 or something similar.

I believe the 240GB iPod is about ~$275 if you get it from ipodzens...not a bad deal at all. and it's probably the DAP with the highest capacity out there, for now at least...

Archos 5 250 GB or 320 GB

Thank you for the replies! I will check these out.

I remember owning an old 20gig 3rd gen ipod way back in the day and taking it back due to really poor SQ, I hear the newer ones are a ton better. Havn't heard about Archos SQ though.

Not as good as a Sony, but I think they're just as good as a ipod

iPod/DIYMod/iMod 5.5g 80gb or even a 240gb HDD with Rockbox for sure!

OMG thank you. I was debating on doing this my self or getting a newer zune or ipod. But I feel much better about some one else taking it apart.

You could always choose the HiFiMAN HM-801 and buy 32 Gb SDHC cards as needed. A bit more expensive but IMO much better sounding.

on the off-chance that "take it to work" means you'd be at a desk with a computer, why not just get a good reliable USB2 or Firewire portable external HD, and connect it to whatever machine you work at? provided you can set that computer up for decent audio, that gives you 500GB of tunes or more, for cheap...

if you need to bring your own platform, also in the price range of the iPod people mention here (and cheaper than a HifiMan DAP) could be a netbook with a large enough HD. add forgiving IEMs or use a USB-amp combo, and you'd have good SQ for not all that much...

You mean the one with Droid?  I heard the Archos 5 IT was very buggy on abi, but the review was done in Jan '10.  How is the regular Archos 5 without Droid?    Do you own one?  The review implies that Archos never had a great reputation for SQ, but there's not much competition in terms of hard drive based large capacity players.

Many employers do not allow employees to hook up "stuff" to the office PC thus why many of us resort to taking our own "toys" to the office.

How much is the OP planning to spend? The ALO iMod 240 GB, with LOD and amp, will cost over $1000!
