You should get yourself a second hand Marantz CD63 MK2 KI signature. Sounds really really good. There are a lot of mods you can do to improve, starting from 100$ to 1000$ depending how extreme you are. I really enjoy the standard version but thinking of experimenting a bit in the analog part. Or if you don't want to an old CD player you can always buy CD6003, sounds quite close to CD63 MK2 KI signature but of course with newer optic.

If you are handy with electronics you should really get the CD63 MK2 KI.

That is really expensive. I got mine for 100 euro, mint. Don't you have any local audio marketplace or something?

Cambridge Audio C640v2 would be a really good CD-player for your budget.

The KI sig version of the Marantz player that was mentioned is very hard to come by. When you do find one, it will usually fetch a high price. Some older budget players I would suggest along with what's already been mentioned:

Arcam Alpha

CAL Icon

CAL Tercet

CAL Aria

Denon DCD 1560

Denon DCD 1650ar

Denon DVD 2900

Denon DVD 3900

Denon DVD-5000

Denon DVD-9000

NAD C521 BEE

NAD C525 BEE

NAD C540

Marantz CD-63

Marantz CD-67

Marantz CD-6002

Marantz CD-5003

Nakamichi OMS-7

Pioneer Elite PD-65

Rotel RCD991

Sony XA7ES

Teac VRDS 10

Teac VRDS 20

Why everything is so bloody expensive there in AU? You can get a really good CD player for less than 150 euro here in the Netherlands.

For example this guy will sell it for 100 euro I think, won't go higher than that. http://link.marktplaats.nl/362586569

There is a nice Luxman DZ 121 complete with remote down your way,http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Luxman-DZ-121-CD-Player-/110561252286?cmd=ViewItem&pt=AU_CD_Players&hash=item19bdf6d3be

Nice little unit, fixed and variable RCA outs, optical out and headphone out with volume control.

These are a very nice sounding player with a good transport.

Probably a nice idea: Get yourself one of the tube buffer from Yaqin between your cd player and amp. They are quite cheap if you buy from ebay. The review here in Head-Fi are very positive about it.

I didn't necessarily want another Luxman but I'm happy to say I just picked up this on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260636263064

A Luxman D321. There isn't much info on it anywhere but I seems like it should do the job for me. $122 so I'm happy.

They are a very nice unit, highly rated in there time.Nice to find one that still has the remote.
