Headphone Recable Wire Separator

Sorry if this has been brought up before but I'm not sure what search terms I should be using...

I will be using some mogami neglex quad for an ubalanced recable, and I would like the area where I strip the insulation and split the wires into pairs going to each side to look good. Is there a bit I can buy? or does anyone have any suggestions?

Those things are called cable pants. You can find cheap plastic ones at parts-express among other places. There are expensive versions of the same thing, make out of aluminum shell. Do a search on viablue splitter. Honestly, I prefer heatshrink and nylon multifilament combo. They are quite easily sourced from ebay, and you don't have to pay for large quantities.

I use adhesive heatshrink and pliers to clamp down the middle.  I also like to use old neutrik plug barrels to protect the y-split in an attractive manner, but it doesn't seperate them quite like cable pants.  I think that qables has pretty cable pants also (viablue splitters are really overrated IMO, but then again, both qables and viablue are a bit overpriced).

wood ones !

You can wrap the very ends in a little teflon tape, heatshrink over that, then heatshrink over the joint. It works well for me.

Alternately, using the spare outer casing from a connector works too, just heatshrink over the whole thing.

Thanks guys, it was frustrating trying to find out what they were called using generic search terms.

I think I will do what ujammerstand and John suggested and go with heatshrink method.  It seems the lightest and none of the pants I found struck my fancy, although I couldn't find any example of wood ones, momomo.

I've always used some 3:1 Dual-Wall (adhesive) heatshrink on mine.

cyberspyder's method is the one that I recommend.

As far as splitters go, VT4C has an interesting lineup.  I've ordered top notch stuff from them before, but I have never used their splitters:
