Small mic for long range recording?

I know this forum is general more about listening to music than recording, but I need some starter ideas.

What I'd like to do is record a speaker in a conference or lecture hall without being required to sit close to the speaker.

My best idea on how to solve this is to find a mic that can record at a distance but is still compact enough for me to throw in my laptop bag.

I know there are inevitable noise issues, particularly as I'd need to increase gain at a great distance. I'd like to able to go up to about 30ft, but I don't know how realistic that is. I'm open to any other solutions (yes, I know the best route would be to directly mic the speaker, but that's not an option).

Welcome to headfi! You'll find that this is a very diverse and friendly forum with people from all aspects of life. We are not just music listeners. I know there are at least 3 mastering engineers here, 2 mixing engineers and a couple of post production people as well as many recording hobby fans.

I use two types of microphones for recording anything but the placement is critical. Also, my mics are made and designed by myself and cost quite a bit.

What recording device will you be using? Price range? Do you need the recording to be in stereo? Do you want an all in one solution? Do you plan to record anything other than lectures?

Seems like a cheaper shotgun mic would be the simplest method

I don't plan on making any mics myself, sounds out of my budget (not to mention skillz) :)

Since I won't be recording anything other than lectures, I don't feel I need stereo. I have a mini USB DAC that I'm planning to use with it.

Assuming I go the shotgun mic route, what sort of things should I look for? And how much should I expect to pay?

Thanks so much for your help :)

Try a Rode NTG-2. They are about $270 new, and can be powered by battery. That would be one of the better choices on a reasonable budget.

30 feet out for recording speech is a tough gig. Hopefully the speaker will be amplified. Either way you will probably get a lot of noise, but the Rode shotgun should work well.

Awesome advice! I knew you would eventually post on this thread.
