Is Coheed and Cambria an emo-band?

Help me out:

On a fellow head-fier's recommendation, I have been listening to Coheed and Cambria on and off.  So back story, I wanted to hear something off their new album so I made a request to a local college heavy metal radio station (if you live in NJ, guess which one...its obvious....when you read the end of this post) who promptly told me, "we don't play that band."

I was like why?  They toured with Slipknot I think at one point.

She (DJ) said we don't play them.   They are too emo.

I was totally confused.  I wound up requesting Opeth and that was that.

But seriously, they are EMO?

NO offense to emo fans, but I hate emo.  Sorry.  I think of emo as bands who sing about opening up their wrists because their 14 year old heart was broken AND then they feel guilty about getting blood all over the place (friend's quote but I am stealing it).

I've heard all their albums now and I don't get the emo vibe (SOME SONGS are I guess borderline emo/screamo).

I don't think they are emo at all, thankfully. If you read the lyrics I think you'd find the same. They have some elements of progressive metal and a couple of other types of music. Their albums are based on some comic or graphic noel that Claudio Sanchez is writing or has written and has no emo parts at all, that I can find.

I think the DJ has either listened to other people's wrong description of them being emo or she doesn't know what emo is.

I have heard of them referred to as emo as well but I don't really get that vibe much either.  I mean there are some songs where they sing about how much pain they have felt because of someone they loved but as road said, each CD is based on a graphic novel so I think those are supposed to refer to characters in the story.  I haven't read them but they are supposed to be kind of a science fiction thing.  I definitely love coheed and have all their cds and would have to say that they mostly just seem to be progressive to me.  But, in the end if you like them who cares what genre people think they are right?

They are supposedly progressive rock....Not emo.

Agreed in spirit.  I was doing a self-check on what emo is?  C&C doesn't sound like emo at all.  They are definitely progressive rock to my ears.  Maybe she really hadn't heard of them or heard of them but not heard their music.  Bizarre....they played Alice in Chains in the same block as Five Finger Death Punch and Seamless.
