Best sounding Nontouchscreen PMP

Thread Starter

Hey all, i'm looking for a new PMP to buy. Sound quality is important to me, but so is drive space. I listen to a wide variety of music ranging from Indie to large bass trance and techno, to classical and other instrumentals.

I have been considering the Ipod Classic or Nano and the Cowon iaudio 7. I plan on using the Monster Turbines or Hippo VB.

Your help is much appreciated!

If space is important to you, get the ipod classic.  I would be inclined to say the cowon would sound better but compared to the classic, it lacks in space.

used i7, if you can find one.

I'm not sure I understand the no-touchscreen request, as there are some amazing players out there that just happen to have great touch UIs. The 32gb Cowon J3 + your favorite microSD-HD card(s) comes to mind.

Maybe he's looking for a simple portable player, without video and bla bla.

I can understand the nontouchscreen preference. When working out or running, the no-look tactility of physical buttons is very useful.

I was under the impression that the Sony X1060 was a touchscreen player.

So is the iRiver Clix 2

You could add the Sansa Fuze/Clip+ to your list. They only go up to 8GB, but you can always expand with a MicroSD card.

The J3 has a touchscreen.  Better UI, more efficient at using and finding songs, also has hard buttons, has microSDHC slot, plays FLAC, does it gaplessly, sounds great, and doesn't force you to use it for anything more than music. Don't want video?  Don't put any on it. The big screen is worth far more than a simple video display.

You still get play/pause, Volume +/-, and track +/- hard buttons.  What more does a non-touchscreen device provide that is needed and is more efficient?

I dunno about the OP, but personally I think that's perfect. Unfortunate thing is that those buttons are sometimes hidden from view and not mentioned on retailer pages for some players (J3 shows em, just checked).

The iAudio 9 looks interesting. It has touch controls, but apparently you can adjust the sensitivity. I'm kinda in the market for the lowest cost player that has better SQ than my Clip+.

I'm in the same position, but I really want the microSDHC capability so I can grow my capacity.  That pretty much leaves me with Fuze (or Clip).  The J3 and older D2+ (which have chip expansion) both are touch screen.  So, right now I'm deciding on several 16GB (no chip expansion) players or the Fuze.

I will probably wind up with the Fuze, Rockbox it and be done with it all.

I had a fuze and really liked it, and thought the sound was very nice tbqh. It was a good size, the scroll wheel was handily accessible without looking at it (pocket or strap). It had an efficient, quality feel to it, and for $40 I was plenty happy. The clock battery was dead out of the box, though.

Need lots of capacity? iPod Video 5/5.5g - 30/60 or 80gb (Rockboxed)

Want a great DAP that doen't make compromises? Cowon J3

Want to live with a touch screen and amazing SQ? s:flo2

Want something cheap and simple? Sansa Clip+/Fuze (Rockboxed)

I think they have got to be your options and are all great players.

How simple can it be if the manual is 209 pages?
