Fostex T50RP : Impressions and Future DIY PVC Housings - Page 2

bluetak is too heavy, I'm not too interested...but the foam has drastically improved the low end bass impact and removed the "tin can" effect.

still the center channel is hollow on this phone, the low mids mushy and the drivers too damn sloooooooow...very impressive for the price you can find it, though.

V2 earpads are smooth not rippled.

oh, like this: http://www.majormusic.com.au/images/t50rp.jpg

mine are a bit rippled on the sides like beyer's, but definitely not that bad!

anyway, yes the foam provides a very clear and tight low-end bass....this phone is only a few hours old I think, I'll let it burn-in in a corner...maybe the center channel and the low-mids will clear up, but the drivers speed still won't improve hehe.

can't believe how the SQ has improved from stock...are the Fostex engineers deaf?

Yeah, the ones in the picture are the older version.

I just pulled the foam off the front of the drivers, and it does make a big difference for the better.  I've been getting fairly aggressive with the mods on these ones since I'll be Thunderpantsing them soon anyway.

BTW, can you bend the headband? I'd rather not break it in two, but I could use less clamping.

I've also tried other thicker earpads or angling the stock ones, but that didn't really work...all it did was making the sound more hollow.

It should stretch a bit--the additional thickness of the cups for the Thunderpants mod has to put more strain on the headband, and no-one has reported problems with it.

well, the ebay cd3k earpads are thicker than stock, that really kills its SS..and the cd900st has thin earpads that cannot really be replaced either, use thicker DT250 velours earpads and the sound becomes hollow and bloated.

OTOH, the cd1700 sounded much better w/ the ebay cd3k earpads than w/ its stock velours earpads...I really hate the sound velours gives to bass...flabby and bloated.

anyway, I'm listening to my t50rp w/ fresh ears, it sounds less resolving/refined than my cd1k(same drivers as the cd3k) but more natural...and removing the felt from the cups sides has really opened the SS. PRaT is good, and it's not fatiguing due to its slow drivers...the cd3k drivers throw more informations than the human brain can analyze(and so do my beloved LT1363 opamps) but the t50rp doesn't play the speed game to impress, it's very laid back in comparison.

I'll remove some of the foam, the low end bass is really too loud atm...and I'll try to bend the headband, even though I don't think I'll succeed.

PS: There's a major lack of resolution in the upper spectrum...nothing beats BioCellulose diaphragms, but the sound feels really natural and not artificial whatsoever.
