Okay ladies and gentlemen, I need your keen eyes and vast experience to help me determine if these are counterfeits or the real deal!

These are Toshiba 2SC2238/2SA968 parts, supposedly sourced from Japan.

Take a look and let me know what you think!!

My opinion is they are fake. That's just going off the 'T' as the logo which should look like the favicon of this site: http://www.semicon.toshiba.co.jp/eng/

This post on rock grotto came to mind when I read this post: http://rockgrotto.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=chitchat&thread=4032&page=2#50342

I have also a few 2SC2238/2SA968 that I bought a while ago. I've never used them because when I bought them I was unaware that there were so many fakes around ebay and when I found out I decided not to risk the build. Maybe someone can tell if they are fakes or not:

Not a very good photo, sorry

By the way, has anyone ever used magnatec's 2SC2238/2SA968 transistors? (sold in RS)

Wow, those are vastly different. Particularly the 968. That back of that part is really unique!

If we are lucky, one of us has the real deal.

Thanks for posting the picture.

Hopefully someone who has seen a real one can chime in.

Yes, the back of those 968 is very strange (or at less it's strange to me). Also the mark on the front is strange, looks more like an F than like a T, that's what makes me believe that those are fakes.

The mark in the 238 front looks good to me, seems like toshiba's logo, but I guess that it can be easily stamped into another transistor to produce a decent counterfeit.

Let's see if someone can help us

I am learning a lot about counterfeit electronic parts. Who knew there was such a market. Especially for small price transistors.

Some counterfeits appear to be subtle, some, not so subtle.

Some are extremely clever, witness:

Unbelievable.

Were those caps from an online auction?

The pictures are from a Spanish site (http://transfal.tripod.com/). They are further linked to other sites.

The second picture above links to an eBay review. They were actually being sold online via eBay.

Buyer beware for sure. Potentially very dangerous.

I guess the moral of the story is if you buy caps on an auction, you better get a few extra to cut open :p
