Pro 900 vs k701 vs ALO-780

Thread Starter

<$400 budget im down to these. The main thing im looking for is a airy 3D soundstage with great imaging/positioning so not only width, true 3d. In addition to this I am looking for the most transparent/least sibilant pair which will go perfect with techno/trance.

I hear the ultrasones are meant to have the most 3d SS but then again k701 is known for it's SS and i haven't heard much about the ALO-780 soundstage.

come on guys help me seal the deal!

your also welcome to suggest any alternatives, but only if you've heard at least one of these three.

It would also be interesting(not important) to hear any comments on alo780 bass quality/extension/punch vs pro 900, because i know the k701's can't compete with them in bass :)

Pro 900 with Kees mod is perfect for what your needs are. K701 would be terribly disappointing for Techno/Trance.

For the K701/2 you'll need a good DAC and amp. With the Ultrasones you can save some time and money, the sound stage of the Pro/PL-650 is about 80% of the K-702.

The Pro-900 are bass heavy you'll need to check them out and to see if you like them.

KeeS modded Pro 900... A lot better then the Audiotechnica A900 and K701 regarding soundstage on these ears.

I've owned the K-701 and have heard the others at meets. Owning the K-701 was like an abusive relationship. I wanted to love them, but they treated me like dirt and did horrible things to my ears. They are artifically flavored strawberry to an actual strawberry. Audio-Technica has never stirred any passion in me and I have yet to meet an Ultrasone I like. And is that one with an ALO cable? I won't get into it here, but take a long, hard look at the value of aftermarket cables. I recommend doing some homework on how much cables cost versus what they're sold for. Ask yourself where the difference goes. If you haven't read the infamous "garden hose" thread, you should. Anyhow, for good trance headphones under $400, look at the Sennheiser HD-650, Sony MDR-SA5000 and the various Denon models. I can't bring myself to buy a Denon, however, I've really enjoyed them listening to bassy music. I just don't have enough of that music in my library to justify a purchase and the SA5000 handles it awfully well when I do listen.

FWIR and with my experiences modding my own 780s, it seems like the biggest benefits between the Alo and the stock come from internal dampening and removing the diode board. I'm not saying the Alo or Jena cables aren't beneficial, just saying you could get a large chunk of those benefits from recabling and dampening them yourself. Even if you decided to recable with Jena, you could buy the Jena Ultra wire for about $140 and then get the stock 780s for ~$150 on ebay and DIY. But then again, I have no personal experience with the Alo modded 780s so I may be completely off base....

Aha! You don't like everything I like! haha and I don't fully appreciate what you suggest. I find Denons and Sennheisers too polite to give me enjoyment out of my music. I truly tried to enjoy Sennheisers when I heard them but I wanted more excitement.

I love AKGs, Audio Technicas, and Ultrasones. To each their own =)

The pro900's are a clear step-up from the AD900's and dominate them in every respect.

If you're listening through a computer, look into VST plugins...

Soundstage - TB_Isone - < http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/564465/misconception-of-neutral-accurate >

Reducing sibilance - SineGen/EQ method. - < http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/413900/how-to-equalize-your-headphones-a-tutorial >

good luck,

fellow trancehead!
