If you had the choice to be blind or deaf..

Thread Starter

which would you choose? lol i thought this would be an interesting topic on head-fi

As much as I would hate to give up music, it's much harder to live independently as a blind person than as a deaf person. Also, being blind would make my line of work nearly impossible.

neither

I'd shoot myself...(not really)

easy choice.

i'd give up my sight over hearing.

I think I saw a thread exactly like this before.

I'd give up hearing. Sight is more valuable for daily function, and it's more likely that some day we will develop means to pump music directly to our brains than pump images.

Also, if I practice, I could probably "listen" to music just by watching a spectrum analyzer or oscilloscope.

From an evolutionary point of view it depends. I would rather be blind, for sound is just too important for me.

Deafness would make you more visually expressive though, nope I love sound more than sight.

being blind i could not enjoy film, video games, porn

being deaf i could not enjoy film (even silent films have music), video games, music

i'd rather not think about it

I need my limbs to survive. I feel more secure if I can see. If tragedy stroke on me, I'd choose to give up my hearing.

Anybody choosing to give up sight over hearing - seriously?

And, then what - sit around with your headphones on listening to music for - what - the rest of your life?  You're 50 years old and have been sitting in the dark for 30 years.  You run out of juice, and need someone to go to the store to get it for you.  You can't travel or go anywhere without someone taking you, and even then you can't see anything - including yourself - anyway.  Might as well stay home to listen to music I guess, which you've been doing every day since...

Come on.

Can i choose being a Mute instead?

i know its not in the criteria but just imagine the things i could do with my fingers... (stares at the wall)

I choose taste. That's not one of the available senses? Damn.

Well, I'd be incredibly depressed not being able to see... I'd probably go insane from not being able to hear.

BUT, I choose deaf. I could always get one of those implants that gets burrowed into somewhere in your brain and POW marginal amount of sound returned. I WIN THE GAME!

Tossing the coin - hearing wins and here's why:  Assuming I had both until now, I can live with the visual memories of my family and friends as they will be forever young in my mind.  And in a morbid, but inevitable point of view, I would rather hear death coming.  I have lived long enough to enjoy "seeing" beauty.  At least with hearing, I can still excercise my mature selective hearing and let it go in one ear and out the other.

Really? I'd like to hear (or see!) your reasoning behind this. Me personally, I'm creeped out at the idea of hearing my doom but knowing not what makes it.
