USB DAC in Windows 7 Generic driver or hardware supplied driver?

Thread Starter

I have the:

http://www.esi-audio.com/products/gigaporthd/

And it says it can do 96kHz with 24-bit and 2 channels.

If I install the drivers I can choose this but how do I know if it really is true 24?

I uninstalled the drivers and made windows use its generic driver, but during this

I read the generic driver can only do 16-bit, and the dropdown menu is greyed out at 44/16

Offcourse one can just try and listen to what sounds the best, but I want to know what is the best in theory?

If the device is only upsampling then it doesnt matter.....for this device.

But if it doesnt, or I get a true 24bit DAC what is the reson to use either driver?

Most of the music is from cd´s so 16bit should be the limit anyways?

Right now I have aimp2 with generic usb driver. Amp2 cant do either asio or wasapi.

I also have foobar2000 with wasabi:generic usb driver.

I really like the idea about not using the drivers for the device and clutter the chain with unessecary things

but it could take a while to figure out what sounds the best just listening.

You might have to listen to alot of different music for a week or 2 and then switch?

What is your ideas?

You'll have to use the supplied drivers if you want 24/96.  The generic USB audio driver doesn't support anything higher 16/48.
