Absolutely +1.  I love everything Bill Evans, from Everybody digs to Waltz for Debby, although I'd have to say my favorite Bill Evans albums are his solo ones (like alone and alone again.)

It was between Miles and Mingus.

I picked Miles because I am more attached to his albums than Mingus'.

And you didn't mention Herbie Hancock for what reason?

Nice thread, but it's missing some seminal figures.....

These include:

Charlie Parker

Dizzy Gillespie

Louis Armstrong

Duke Ellington

and many others........

of the 4 Mingus is my favorite, followed by Coltrane, followed by Monk, followed by Davis..........

some more minor figures who deserve a mention amongst the 4 mentioned would be:

Sonny Rollins

Eric Dolphy

Bud Powell

Sonny Rollins is a close 3rd in the sax world to Bird and Trane...

...the fact that Coltrane created much of what is considered contemporary jazz with giant steps, with major third root movement instead minor and major seconds..

I love Rollins...........but i would say he comes in 5th.......

1. Charlie Parker

2. John Coltrane

3. Lester Young

4. Coleman Hawkins

5. Sonny Rollins

Oh what, and Eric Dolphy doesn't even get an honorable mention?

(Listening to his "Out To Lunch" album as I write.)

And no, other than what I've read, I can't write intelligently on the subject of Jazz.

Now listening to Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane.
