iPod 5.5 SQ?

Mostly people have been raving about the iPad w/ camera kit and iPhone 4 lately beating previous iterations.  Both use the Cirrus Logic chip that is said to offer more detail in a more forward way.  Some people still prefer the 5.5g though and some have remarked that Wolfson Dac (WM8758?) to be preferable in overall presentation whereas the new Cirrus Logic may be artificially detailed to their ears.  Going off what I have read.

@Carnival: Load RockBox on that beast and you'll see how good it really can sound - all with no permanent modding.

sorry to jack your thread but I was kind of wondering the same thing, I was debating getting a v1 fuze and using a LOD w/rockbox vs spending more on another DAP if the quality is really a boost. I've found ipod 5g videos for a decent price which can be rockboxed can anyone weigh in on weather it's really worth it to spend more on higher end DAP, only to be used with music BTW.

RockBox works fine without an amp BTW - it's not a necessity,..........................................

You can do the DIYMOD (or get it done by someone for $150 including the necessary LOD)...that's about $280 cheaper than the iMod but offers the same benefits.

You mean the hp out or the DAC section?

I prefer the 5.5G to the Fuze v1. They both sound quite good and it comes down to whether you prefer more precise positioning and detail (5.5G), versus a more warm sound (Fuze).

x2. Rockbox on a 5.5g is awesome. I just wish that I didn't have to recharge it so much because my battery is so old. I'm too lazy to swap it out with a new one.
 

Yeah I just got my iPod Video 5.5g 80gb and playing the same FLAC files with the volume matched by my ears with both players running Rockbox I have to say the SQ beats my humble Sansa Clip+. I suck at analyzing sound so I'll not try to describe it, but there was a noticeable improvement to my ears.

Well, I'm not too fond of the Sansa Fuze or clip/+ SQ - so a RockBoxed 5.5G wins in my ears/eyes every time.

one last question sorry, but is there a noticeable difference between sq in an ipod video 5g and 5.5g? I have heard they use the same chips from some people, then differently from others.

As far as I'm aware the sound signature would be extremely similar if not exactly the same.

The only thing they changed was software, hard drive capacity, battery capacity and price... At least to my knowledge.

I highly doubt the sound signature changed much between the 5 and 5.5g iPod Video players.
