The HD600 and K701 are mid-fi sweet spot headphones.  Very good headphones, but still what would qualify as mid-fi sweet spot for this poll (at least as how I interpret it as).

Although I have yet to own one, I voted for A Single Hi-Fi Flagship Product.  Why?  Because I'd much rather have one headphone that does everything than have to use a different one when I change albums or decide to mix some material.  Detailed, a middle of the road soundstage, (not abnormally large but not claustrophobic either) realistic bass, no emphasized "bumps" in the spectrum, and a full-bodied sound.  In other words, accurate and able to offer a faithful representation without sounding flat and lifeless.  It seems much easier to find this in a speaker setup, but I much prefer the intimacy and articulated sound of headphones.

A week to go and still neck and neck...

It's just been my experience that even a flagship cannot do everything. I've tried the RS1 for instance and while it was definitely a great can, it wasn't a can I'd go to for some chillout. Just a comment by the way not trying to change anyone's mind here.

I just had a similar experience with the Beyer T1.

Thinking about what I said, I came up with the same conclusion as you have and voted accordingly (preferring to have several mid-fi cans). Although, in an ideal world, I'd have several flagship models (wouldn't we all!).

I have to have at least two headphones, indoors and outdoors. Besides, having more than one headphone always gives you the option to switch according to mood, source, album etcetera...

In time I will have less headphones though...

I've been following this thread for a while (voted a while back) and I suppose I'll get out of being a reclusive recalcitrant :)

I voted for single hifi, even though I've never owned anything that is truly 'up there'. I'm under the assumption this is for home use (as per reading your replies to this thread) and not portable use, which is where most of my critical listening occurs. I also assume that you are offering at least 2 grand to play around with, because most Hifi HPs aren't run out of iPods.

I'd probably take an O2 MK I as the ideal headphone. Unlike most of HeadFi, I am really sensitive to weight and comfort, and not ALL high end phones care for that (LCD2..)

I'd be fine with running it out of a cheap DIY amp + DAC, such as exstata. Though if it can be driven under ideal circumstances, a BH would be great too (though certainly not necessary).

If stretched up to 6k, I wouldn't mind trying R10 and mating it with something cheap like a Beta. If I had to take a dynamic 1k headphone, it would be between HD800 and T1, which are probably the most comfortable phones in that range. Sadly, I doubt either would be sonically passable for me (sound signature, too analytical, etc.)

I always sell extra headphones that I no longer use (unless they cost less than $10). I also don't like to play favorites. This just works for me.

Headphone hifi, because its cheaper/more attainable than speaker hifi (specifically love the detailed sound in headphone hifi).

The final result is well within the margin of error and is a statistical tie. Cool.

Point and 95% Confidence Interval estimates for the true population proportion of Head-Fiers who:

prefer several mid-fi sweet spot products:

50.7%  [Don't understand why 50.7% was rounded down to 50% in the final report.]

[46.5%, 54.9%]

prefer a single hi-fi flagship product:

49.3%

[45.1%, 53.5%].

Margin of Error = 4.2%.

It was essentially a "tie", folks.

Thank yous to all you RESPONSIVE Head-Fiers.  Shame on yous to the could-have-voted but unresponsive lot.
