Although contemporary, very non-traditional

I don't know if death metal is a good analogy, given that it's so boring and dare I say 'mainstream' these days, although there are always proponents with any genre that are seeking to push boundaries.  Don't get me wrong, I know what you're getting at.  A lot of new music, no matter how contrived and mainstream, will sound 'unconventional' to an older generation.  Your Dad seems to have a keen sense of humour :)

RAR (rock against rock) or RIO (rock in oppostion), some electronica  and 'modern' classical (sounds wrong eh?) is more outrageous in the current context imo.

Erik Satie is a good example from the late 19th C.  Weird little man.

Interesting idea for a thread btw.

alright, we're all getting way off the OP's original question about "classical rebels".

but now that the thread is veering towards 20th century iconoclastic composers, I see all your canonical names and raise you a viking:

Moondog!

^ What a great read. Thanks for posting that.  Sounds like a real character.  I'll have to check out his stuff.

Mr Scruff!  Fancy that!

If you can lay your hands on that '69 "Moondog", it's a fine piece of music.  Still have the vinyl.

Thanks again guys. Much appreciated. I have recently come to the realisation that this is the best thing about this forum:

THE MUSIC

Beats the hell out of reading post-aholics arguing the toss over the merits of their gear.

Apologies for the digression
