Are "backward compatible" Playstation 3s worthwhile to hunt down

My son has about 60 PS2 games and we're thinking about getting a PS3. I sure hate to trash all those PS2 games and I don't want to run two units. My question is: If I pay the premium for a backward compatible PS3, would I be missing out on any feature/performance that is offered with newer editions of the PS3?

Why doesn't he get a new PS3 and keep his old PS2?

All his save games are on his PS2 memory cards and the new PS3 have more space on the hard drive.

Well the old PS3 has SACD support ;)

Well, here is the chart:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3#Model_comparison

So, it depends whether you are willing to give up the massive increase in space, CEC, and Dolby TrueHD & DTS-HD Master Audio bitstreaming.  It's all up to you.  As mentioned, the new ones can't read SACD, and they can't play PS2 games.  Is it that important to have PS2 compatibility? You'll lose all of your saved games.  Plus, forget PS2 games.  If you feel nostalgic in the future, just run an emulator.  The newer games are overall getting better.  The only thing I'd want to play is maybe old RPGs.

I have a slim and fat PS3 and this is the reason why i cant sell my fat one its because of the backwards compatibility. while the slim i use it for camping outdoors etc etc, i'll go with kahanete  keep both.

I've got an original 60 gig model with SACD support and backwards compatibility. Just out of curiousity, how much does an used unit sell for if in great condition?

Khanate has the best suggestion, just keep the PS2 and get a new Slim PS3.

The majority of PS2 games will work on the backwards compatible PS3s, but many will not. As a sales associate in a store that sells PS3s, I heard a wonderful story from some customers who bought the last BC PS3 (the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle) and then grabbed the PS2 Metal Gear Solid collection, that they had gone home, marathoned the games through and found that the third game would cut out a quarter way through. I found that hilarious and a complete waste of technology and money for those folks.

My brother has an 80GB BC (which I used for quite some time) and I have a 250GB Slim and although I don't play my PS2 stuff anymore, I still have my PS2 sitting next to it on the shelf just in case I get a hankerin'.

A quick look on eBay lists used 60GB & BC 80GB (Not all 80GBs are backwards compatible) consoles for $200+ and new consoles for $300+. Definitely not worth the smaller HDD, higher risk of laser issues and YLOD (Yellow Light of Death) for some PS2 games. Get the PS3 with the intent of playing PS3 games and taking advantage of the features it has to offer.

I have the fat PS3 and the PS2 for when I feel like firing up some old games.

I see your wisdom, Oh master. Makes total sense. I will forget about the BC model. Thanks!
