I dunno, but rockbox does not sound very good. Yes, it has truckload of features. Must be the decoders or something.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

ext23, try looking in the #MUSIC# folder. Or just reformat and if Rockbox disappears, drag the .rockbox folder back in.

I think that with the EQ disabled it is truly flat, whereas with the OF, the "Normal" setting isn't truly flat....perhaps that is the difference you are hearing? For me, using the EQ has been nothing short of amazing....I can get my desired sound with any of my headphones,, and save the settings for each one right there on the player.

I don't play games, watch videos, or any of the other stuff....just listen to my tunes....and I couldn't be happier.

im still tossing up between the Clip+ Rockbox and the Walkman A828.

The Walkman has better soundstage and highs.

The Clip+ appears to be fuller in the mids, but is also more grainy in the mids and highs.

The Walkman has background hiss.

The Clip+ does not.

My Walkman is 8Gb.

The Clip+ i have is 18Gb

The UI of the Walkman is better.

The screen of the Clip+ requires me to use a big font that only gives me 2 lines.

Certainly the EQ of the Rockbox is a lot more flexible than the Walkman.

Value for money I'd have to give it to the Clip+ Rockboxed, but the A828 is a more enjoyable experience IMO.

I think i'll keep the clip+ purely for the versatility of having the 18Gb.

One thing with the OF is that I can hear more depth and instrument separation than with rockbox. I also hear less distortion and there is more clarity. I have not been able to mimic the OF sound with rockbox. Oh well...

i'm not too keen on playing with EQs, since i'm not an audiophile and my headphones probably don't warrant it anyway. but, after loading some 320kbps mp3s on the brand-new clip last night, the default 'flat' sound on rockbox sounded pretty damn good.

On my fuze, I find the mids and highs grainy with rockbox for whatever reason, but not with the OF. The rockbox highs just sound wrong. I do not have a Clip+,  but I suspect the mids and highs of the OF sounds better.

Anytime you have a problem or annoying bugs, just format the clip. Until RB is fully stable you'll always find small glitches.

And I doubt that RB makes the SQ worse, firmware cant change SQ that much.

firmware can and does change SQ. And RB either work or does not work after you have installed it. I have never seen RB work half way and if it was unreliable it was due to the build update being buggy. I have rockboxed sansa clip, sansa c250, sansa e280 v1/v2, sansa fuze v1, ipod video 5.5.

can anybody comment on whether the 'flat' rockbox EQ sounds better or worse than the 'flat' official sandisk firmware?

I personally consider them on par with each other. Just putting on Rockbox (to my ears) doesn't change the sound (for better or worse).

It's the vast amount of settings that allow you to make Rockbox sound better than the OF - as well as the added features.

DJGeorgeT obviously has a different opinion on this, and power to him. Ever since installing Rockbox I wouldn't dream of turning back.

I thought there was a slight difference, and that the RB flat was slightly more flat.....but it is possible I am wrong. Just seems like with flat EQ, at higher volumes, that I used to get more sibilance/shrillness from my KSC75's at higher volumes when I was out and about.

Agreed! Since installing Rockbox, I haven't used the OF at all, asides from the necessity of booting into it to add /remove content on my two Clip+ players (not necessary on my V1 Fuze).

yeah, the UI alone makes it worthwhile in my opinion. i will tinker with the EQ when i become a more patient human being.
