I received the DT990 (600 ohm) today. (Thanks to Amazon's Student account and $3.00 one-day shipping.) Initial impressions, after about 7 hours of burn in with pink-noise, that the bass is amazing! I've never heard headphones with such large quantity of bass. I think it's good quality bass too; not bloated or muddy at all. Like other have experience, the mid-range is slightly recessed, but that doesn't bother me. There is more weight and body in the mid-range compared to the DT880. I do find that the DT880's mid-range has more clarity (perhaps because it sounds thinner?). The treble is smooth, but doesn't sound as detailed as the DT880. This probably covers up some flaws in poorly-recorded pop music. There is a lot of sibilance, more than the DT880. I hope this will lessen with burn-in.
Based on what I heard so far, I'm leaning more on selling the Sennheiser HD650. Right now, I'm not sure whether I will keep the DT880 or DT990. Which one would be better for most music types? I listen to all kinds of genre, except hip-hop and metal.
Welcome to the beyerdynamic club my friend! Yeah sell the HD650's for sure man, they aren't as nice as the DT880 or DT990. Not by a long shot at least. They a muffled sound and have too much mushy bass IMO (too much bass compared to the HD600).
I find the DT880 to be a jack of all trades when it comes to music. It can do everything very well, while the DT990 is more suited to rap/techno/metal/rock, well anything that requires bass the DT990 excels with.
