I currently have a modded Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Pro PCI that's been hotrodded. It's great but I only use the digital output so most of the mods aren't being used, except for 1. The problem is, I had the muting transistors bypassed which, when I used the analog outputs, I didn't notice a difference. I started using digital and I get all kinds of loud pops because the muting transistors aren't there. The mod removes them for quality reasons but it apparently only affects digital output.
Make no mistake, the card still works. The popping only happens when you start/stop a audio stream, most notably in Windows Media Player and WASAPI in Foobar2000.
All the capacitors have been replaced with Panasonic FM series, the muting transistors have been bypassed (a "pop" occurs when starting/stopping audio stream with digital output), several caps have been bypassed and the L/R opamp has been replaced with a TL082 opamp. There's also some ghetto EMI/RFI protection on the back consisting of aluminum foil and anti-static bags.
