$300-400 Passive Speaker Recommendations

Thread Starter

I just bought my new Yamaha RX-V467 receiver a couple weeks ago. I know it's nowhere near the quality most of you are accustomed to, but it was the best overall decision I could make with my budget at the time. Now, I have around $350 to spend on a pair of speakers to go along with my new receiver. Here are all of the specifics I'm looking for that I can think of, but if you think of more questions to ask, please feel free. It'll be hooked up via HDMI to my PS3, and via Toslink to my PC, (most likely running a combination of FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, and VBR MP3, plus some gaming) plus hooked up to my TV. It'll play music, Blu Ray movies, DVD movies, and PC and PS3 games.

The Room

- About 12x15 or So

- Carpeted

- The corner most likely to house the TV, PC and rest of the set up is at a 45* angle to the 2 adjacent walls

- I have room for floorstanding, bookshelves on stands, or bookshelves on a desk

Musical Tastes

- Lots of Post Rock (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, This Will Destroy You, Mono, etc)

- Some Hardcore / Metal / Punk (A Wilhelm Scream, Lamb of God, No Trigger)

- Some Hip Hop (Eminem, Immortal Technique, Talib Kweli)

- A Little Bit of Jazz (Miles Davis, Roy Hargrove, Nicholas Payton... Primarily trumpets)

- A Little Bit of Orchestral (Mahler primarily, usually symphonic works, not chamber stuff)

Movie / Game Sound Signature

- I want clarity and fidelity, obviously, but these are probably the priority

- Volume would be nice, but not a necessity, I'm in a condo anyway

- I realize I will have to sacrifice bass, but some low end warmth and punch would be appreciated until I can get a sub

I have been talking to a coworker of mine who has a great sound set up (B&W 802s as his mains, 805s for the rear and sides, 3 Velodyne subs, etc) and he thought getting some used B&Ws would be the best bet. I found a pair of 602.5s on Audiogon for $350, but the guy never responded to my offer or e-mails. Another suggestion I had heard was Paradigm Monitor 7s. I know in this price range I will have to make a lot of compromises, especially considering my budget and amplification, but I'm looking for the very best bang-for-buck speakers I can get. Chances are down the road whatever I get will be moved to the rears and I will upgrade the mains to something better.

So, what are your suggestions, Head-Fi? Again, any further questions I'm more than happy to answer.

All the Best,

Patrick

You are going to get the biggest bang in the used market, as you already know.
