Sound card to DAC spdif question

Please pardon my naïveté: I have an X-fi Titanium soundcard hooked up to my V-DAC via toslink (optical, spdif). Here are my questions about the consequences of doing that:

1. I am wondering if the sound card's xram and other processes are completely negated or passed on to the V-DAC?

2. I still get 3D positioning and whatnot, but are the affects of lower quality because the V-DAC is overwriting processes that the sound card was designed to do?

Thanks

1. That should be user adjustable.

2.  The V-dac will be able to convert the digital processing better than the in-built dac.

There should be no doubt in your mind that you are in a win win situation.  Your system is now able to exploit exotic cans.  In fact my desktop just died, this gives me an idea to build a new computer with a soundcard that can output DolbyHP digitally - so my dac can do the conversion for watching DVDs.

Thanks for the insightful reply! I wonder how I will be able to configure it. Hmm. I guess by default it wouldn't do anything at all besides DAC, because the DAC is just a small part of what the x-fi soundcard does?
