So I got myself a DAC now need some tips...

I had a spare laptop kicking about and decided to build a music server, ripped all my CDs , settled on 320 mp3 as I couldn't tell it apart from lossless. I bought a Aune DAC mk 2 , it sounds pretty good especially through Coax.
I am using iTunes to manage the library but I am aware that there are plugins for winamp and foobar that provide bit perfect data output using a different protocol from Windows kmixer.
Can anyone (pref a geekophile) explain a bit more about this?
I am waiting on some SRH-440 coming today, is the Aunes headphone stage any good?

See Foobar's excellent FAQ/Setup guide for bit perfect operation. It will explain everything. Too bad you ripped the CD's to mp3...FLAC would have been a better option since you can decode the files back to wav and then re encode them for whatever device you need them for (mp3 for portable etc).

A good SC won't compete with a decent outboard DAC so you might want to pick up an entry level unit that will work with whatever the laptop will transmit (USB or TOSLink/SPDIF COAX). Another option is a amp/dac combo box. There are a number of really good ones at the 300USD and under price point to choose from.

Peete.
