Can you test a Coax Spdif out with a multimeter

Thread Starter

Trying to work out if my CD player is faulty or my Dac (wont lock), i dont have any other coax outs to test with , i have a multimeter and wondered if you could use it to measure OHMs or something on the cable? I dont want to buy a new CD player if it is the DAC!

You can use a multi-meter to determine if there is 'any' signal on the coax, but it won't tell you much about the signal.  You would need a (fast) oscilliscope for that.

You can also use a multi-meter to check continuity on the cable.  This will help to determine if the cable is broken, but again, it won't tell you everything about the cable.

Best,
