I remember a while ago something like this resulted from a case of industrial espionage.

A Japanese manufacturer noticed someone was trying to hack the server where they kept

the formula for their electrolyte. They thought it would be a great joke to "poison the formula"

and let the would be hackers have it. The result was a batch of bad caps that almost brought

the computer industry to it's knees.

Two different things...

 

The capacitor issues Dell, Intel and Apple had are not related to the "Luminous Town Electric company scandal" but are attributed to faulty HN and HM series electrolytic capacitors produced by Nichicon. ;)

In college (a year or so ago) there was a a suite of Dells and about 1 in 3 of them could be turned off remotely by placing a mobile phone, an iPhone worked well, above the CD drive bay and ringing it. Who knows what was actually going on but it was pretty funny.
