beyerdynamic T5p: Photos and first impressions. - Page 82

The TH900 is fun, no doubt about that. Still I use the T1 more often (but the T5p muss less).

If someone is in love with the Fostex sound I think the TH600 is the wiser choice given the difference in price... Nevertheless the red cups are still a class of their own.

$800 for red cups =

The (small) difference in quality between TH600 and TH900 is IMO masked by their slightly different sound signature, with the TH600 being a bit flatter. Frankly I think the value/money ratio is better with the TH600. So with slight exaggeration one could state that as '800,- für red cups'. Which are still a real work of art.

I have to admit that overall the T5p has just misses that bit of bass that the T1 has. As noted above I've found the HP-V1 to be a nice amp for the T5p, giving them a bit more bottom. That might be the outcome of the (suspected) higher output impedance of the V1 (Fostex won't talk about that) and the interesting impedance curve of the T5p. But this is just speculation...

I tend to find the TH900's bass overwhelming with most amps.
It's quite true that the 900 is well south of neutral...but it takes wonderfully to a little equivalent bump in the mids! The T5p on the other hand is well north of neutral and is to bright on many genres of music, especially pop and dance.

True enough...the 900 does lack some intimacy cos of mid dip, but it's space, resolution and atmosphere is very seductive....I'd match it with an LCD 2 or 3 which sound more natural And intimate for acoustic guitar and male vocal.

Daaaang... Tell your boy Martin he doesn't have to grow the dang trees for the cups, jeez! :D

Jk, natch. I really am interested in seeing how that turns out, as it's probably the most dramatic mod of the T5p I've ever come across.

Btw, I am really having difficulty getting any company to reply back to me on getting the T5p modded for dual-entry mini-XLRs a la Audeze. I sent Moon Audio multiple messages weeks ago, both via their website and email to Drew directly, and never heard a reply at all. So I emailed Peter at DHC almost two weeks ago, and haven't heard back from him either. The only person who responded to me was Brian at BTG, but he said he found out he isn't able to perform the mod :frown:

So anybody have a company that can perform the mod, does good work, isn't exorbitantly priced, and actually replies to messages? I really want to get this cable replaced, as it's going out again, and it makes no sense to repair a cable that is almost certainly just going to break yet again. Offhand, the only company I can recall being mentioned that I haven't spoken with yet is Aphrodite Cu29, because I get the impression it's significantly more expensive-- but I could certainly be mistaken here.

I'd appreciate any direction anybody wants to share!

Where does the madness end?

I bet the TH900 is better...but isn't this model geared towards bassheads?  If you love the neutrality of the T5p, will you enjoy what the TH900 has to offer (especially in the bass department)?

The price difference between T5p and TH900 is much less compared to the price difference of SR009 and TH900.

In terms of detailing, micro-detailing and openesss and comfort TH900 wins no doubt. It is not about bass, TH900 is warm but it is at the same time is able to have so much micro-detail that I could never find with T5p.

I thought I share my finding, if I had the chance to audition the T5p and TH900 side by side I know I would have never purchased it. Anyways it is part of the experience.

I have the T5p paired with a Burson Soloist SL and now a NAD D1050. The bass when playing Liquid Dubstep is damn strong. It completely outdoes the bass of my DT1350 in slam, impact, depth etc. Still, I can't seem to get past the ever so slight treble peak which extends just that little bit too much for my ears.Other than that, this combination is perfect.

actually i am quite interested in the t5p and have question to owners: from reading it seems, that the ovall signature is very similar to that of the k701. if so, it would be great to have a closed back k701. anyone compared these`?

I was kinda kidding...trying to make a point.

But there must be room to accommodate personal preferences, no?  If this was not the case then every Head-fi member would own the TH900.

I'm quite happy with the T5p.  I'm also happy with the detailing, micro-detailing and openesss and comfort of my HD800...but when I need isolation, I use the T5p.

I owned the K702 right before I purchased the T5p.

Yes, they are indeed very similar.  One big difference is that the T5p actually has mid-bass - both can go very low (sub-bass).  The  T5p cannot compete with the K702 when it comes to soundstage -- not even the T1 could match the K702's soundstage.  The T5p provides excellent isolation and it is easier to drive.

thank you so far. which one sounds brighter? if the t5p is even brighter sounding than the akg and more agressive, it would be too much for my liking.

They are about the same -- the K702 was perhaps a little bit brighter.  I can't hear any sibilance with T5p...and there is no harshness.

My K550 is also brighter than the T5p.
