Worried about support for the 936 ending, I'm on the fence regarding purchasing the 936 or something else. Good recommendations?

Don't be afraid to buy a 936. Just retired from electrical engineering. I bought 6 of these for the lab i worked at 8 yrs. ago & only had to replace 1 handpiece; the rest are still operating serfectly.

the only problem you'll probably get is the stupid plastic knob that breaks down after 2 years.

Replace with aluminum knob and pretend it's hi-fi.

Its by far their best selling unit (and always has been). There are loads and loads of them out there, I don't think service will be stopped anytime soon.

Don't be afraid to buy a 936. It'll probably outlive you, anyway.

It's being replaced with the FX888.

It's obvious: too many clones.  A new design will guarantee at least a period of exclusivity before the clone-makers catch up.  That's probably why the replacement looks so completely different, too.

Looks like a slight performance upgrade as well as a nice size reduction. Never seem to have enough workspace as it is , so, every bit helps.

I agree with TomB though, the number of counterfeits out there is staggering considering it is just a soldering iron. They were no doubt forced to make extensive (read: expensive) design changes just to differentiate the product.

The new model does look a little bit like an egg timer on steroids!

Lol, it really does. I'm kinda partial to the red one though :)
