Pink Floyd Rival (looking...)

I am looking for any music that can even come close to Pink Floyd as far as eerie intensity, mellowness, smoothness, spiritualizing influence, haunting beauty, weird, unique, and epic ... something to trip out or get stoned to.

King Crimson surpasses Pink Floyd on In The Court Of The Crimson King

You might also dig Can's Tago Mago

Early Porcupine Tree (before 2000) may suit, the best one to start with (for =PF) would be "The Sky Moves Sideways".  Also, "Green" by Steve Hillage (1978) - it was actually produced by Nick Mason from Pink Floyd.

Nothing close, except for the members solo stuff!!!!   Besides David Gilmore's recordings, see if you can find Roger Waters "Amused To Death"!!!!!  "It's" his best effort, IMO........If you can get a copy of this on vinyl, you'll really have a rare LP....$350 on up......if you're lucky

If you like Pink Floyd specifically, try any of the first 6 albums by The Alan Parsons Project (note that Alan Parsons was the recording Engineer on "Dark Side of the Moon") - I recommend starting with "I, Robot".

This question will yield a lot of recommendations for various progressive rock bands, and while I love progressive rock like King Crimson and Yes (maybe more even than PF), they are not the same as PF at all, IMHO.  In many ways, nothing really is, which is what made Pink Floyd so special.

Also a great record.  I think all of their first 6 records are terrific.  After that, not so much.

Alan Parsons is a solid recommendation

Some of the Moody Blues stuff is also quite good but they sometimes venture into pure pop territory.

Early Porcupine Tree is a great rec as well they really were on a complete floyd trip back then

Recently there is this band called Pure Reason Revolution who seems to be heavily influenced by Floyd and it shows quite a bit, its a bit more modern, but theres a good chance you might like it.

Ofcourse King Crimson comes to mind as well, except for some of the quirkiness

Definitely Moody Blues, specifically these albums:

Days of Future Passed

In Search of the Lost Chord

Question of Balance

On the Threshold of a Dream

To our Children's Children's Children

Every Good Boy Deserves Favor and Seventh Sojourn not as much

Doesn't quite match Floyd in eeriness but in spiritualizing influence and something to trip out or get stoned to definitely.

See if you can pick up one or all three of the Mandrake Memorial albums (first target would be Puzzle). http://www.amazon.com/Puzzle-Mandrake-Memorial/dp/B000000895/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1277229222&sr=1-3

While not exactly "like" Pink Floyd, this was never far from being played around the same time as early Floyd albums went on the turntable.  Good stuff if I remember the 60's.

Genesis, when Peter Gabriel was still part of the band, check out:

The lamb lies down on Broadway, Selling England by the pound and Foxtrot.

The Lamb is particularly good.

Skylab, I would agree that the standard prog rock recommendations are all totally different than most Pink Floyd. But, that said, Pink Floyd is a great intro into the more complex progressive groups, so don't be afraid to check out some Yes or King Crimson.
