I see your budget's gone out the window...

You know that that Wyred 4 Sound has replaced that model with the W4S DAC-2, right?

Looks nice though, let us know how it works out if you get it!

According to their site they are still selling both for $999 and $1499 respectively - unless I am missing something?

DAC2 did not replace DAC1. Different DACs at different price points.

Whoops, that was an assumption based on their model numbers. They are both evidently pretty new, and the "better" version offers asynchronous USB with a remote control and a different display among other extras, but also needs a proprietary software driver.

There is an eastern electric dac using the sabre dac that is closer to your budget:

I have no experience with the dac.

Biggie.

^ I've been following that since they announced it, looks VERY promising. Not many reviews yet though, if any.

famous last words, angle_sh00ter. it's easier than ever to be tempted, and seduced, by hi-rez audio...

Well i tried a few 96khz albums like Pink Floyd's DSOTM and a few Tool albums and honestly I couldn't hear a difference from the normal 44.1khz albums.

About the Tool albums... Are they vinyl rips or dvd-a or sacd? Either way, listen to the first song on Aenima. The cymbals are way too hot on the 44.1khz version. The whole presentation should be a bit smoother and have more air on the 96khz version. If it's a vinyl rip, the differences should be quite apparent. If it's not a vinyl rip, the differences will be more subtle but they will still be there.

well, one more thing about this topic, @angle_sh00ter: with the HM-601 or another DAP that can play higher-resolution files without up- or down-sampling, you can definitely hear the difference. I can now load a CD- or lower-resolution version of a tune, and a 24/96 version of the same, and make direct comparisons. worth a try!
