AMB M3 at gain 8 for Beyer T1?

Hello everyone!

I am not a DIY guy but love the M3 (gain 11, AD843 with Sigma 11) that I have. So much so that I just bought anohter M3 (gain 8, OP627 with Sigma 11), a Gamma 2 and a Beyer T1 to go with it.

Now my question is whether gain 8 is good enough for the 600 ohm Beyer T1? I can not DIY but can ask my builder to change the gain if necessary (he is molding it for me now). Please advise me.

Also please let me know what is the power output of M3 into 50 ohm headphone (ATH-AD2000) vs. a 600 ohm headphone (Beyer T1)? Will the power output differ from gain 8 vs. gain 11?

Thank you in advance!

The gain 11 M3 worked nicely for my previous ATH-AD2000 (50 ohm), though with a little bit hiss (did not bother at all when music is on).

I hope I can know whether or not gain 8 works for the 600 ohm T1 before I receive the gain 8 M3 from my builder......so that I don't need to pay for extra shipping back and forth and wait for another month

Can anyone with M3 and 600 ohm Beyer cans confirm if gain 8 is enough? Thanks!

BTW, I have not received the T1 yet, so cant even test T1 with the gain 11 M3.

Thanks Ti for the reply. It surely makes sense that higher impedance cans need higher gain.

I am just hoping that someone with M3 and 600 ohm Beyer cans confirm if gain 8 is enough.

At 1.4Vrms output of the Gamma2, 8x gain on the M^3 should be plenty for the 600R @ 102dB/1mW T1s to bring then to ear splitting levels.

i have quite frequently read that you need gain of at least 8 for high impedance headphones.

I have had good success driving 600R headphones off of amps with gain of 1.

I read similar thing somewhere too.....saying that gain 11 was designed for a 600 ohm Beyer. I guess it also depends on what is upstream/the V rms output level.

FallenAngel, I bought the Buffalo 24 you sold to Questa (who in turn sold it to me). I guess the output of Buffalo 24 is even higher than that of the Gamma 2, correct? I will use the T1 in two different systems:1) Buffalo 24 --> M3 --> T1; and 2) Gamma 2 --> M3 --> T1

I have not decided which M3 to use in each system. Currently have a M3 with gain 11, AD843 and Sigma 11. Anohter M3 (gain 8, OP627 with Sigma 11) is being molded by my builder.

Looks like I am good

The y2 with my M^3+Sigma-11 was unbelievably loud even with the gain switch at 5 with my HD800s/HD650s. I couldn't even go past 11 o' clock. Not surprisingly, the gain of 11 was unusable IMO. It restricted the volume pot to around 8 o' clock (from the start). Point being...don't worry about 8 not being enough...it'll be much more than enough with the y2.

gain 8 makes not much difference from 11 in dB, I think 8 is high enough for T1

Thanks to all. I also like to add my 2 cents regarding headphone pairing with my current M3 (gain 11, AD843 with Sigma 11) and the Buffalo 24 dac:

1, ATH-AD2000s (Impedance: 40 ohms, sensitivity: 102dB/mW [JEITA]): improve significantly with M3. Have some bearable hiss and used with volume at 8:30 to 9. The minor hiss does not bother me when music is on, although I decided to upgrade and traded it for Beyer T1.

2, Westone ES3Xs (Impedance: 56 ohms, sensitivity: 124 dB SPL): TONS of hiss at lowest volume, not usable in this system.

3, Yuin PK1s (Impedance: 150 ohms, ? sensitivity): no hiss at all and used with volume at 9., but do not improve a lot with M3.

I never had any audible artifacts (hiss, buzzing etc) with any headphone on my Rockhopper build. Even sensitive earbuds were silent. I tested all at max volume on gain 11 to be sure.

hmm.......thanks for the feedback Shahrose.......I am too lazy to troubleshoot components in my system for now. I will report back with the new M3 with Rockhopper Sigma 11 and T1.......if I can remember
