help with tube preamp

Thread Starter

ok i have a tube preamp and the thing being older than i am started having problems and i need your help as i dont know anything about tubes and hopefully you guys do.

in return i give you how to make line out cables for walkman lol unless you already know how

Anyway the pre works alright but after a while left channel starts disorting and and sometimes it cuts off completely but when i turn it off then turn it on again it works fine...for a while till it does the same thing. there's no noise when there's no music playing  but there's noise from the channel with the problem when i turn off the preamp even without the music.

One thing is that knowing my dad the thing hasnt been looked after or anything and it actually was sitting somewhere in the shed or something for at least 10 years until like 1 year ago when i found out he had these :S

so i think it still has the original.. well first ones were sold in 1967 so like 40 year old components.

large caps were all ELNA except ones on the tube pin things which said 'oil suzuki jcp-a' 0.01μF

few elnas had   'ELYT CAP' so guess they are electrolytics but rest of them were oil.

knowing how old it is i'm suspecting its the power supply ELNA ELYT cap for the left channel and unstable supply or .01 oil cap on the tube pin but then everything in there is a possible culprit knowing how old it is......

I havent tried swapping around the tube to see if the problem moves to the otehr channel so i need to try that but there's like 6 tubes in there with 3 having like a shield thing :S and i dont have schematics lol

are there any other possibilities for the cause of this problem other than caps , tube and supply?

lots of mylar

 4 of  the 6 tubes are12AX7 and rest 12AT7

with the 400WV rating that wiring scares me

i think the tube power amp is gonna need to be checked too since its just as old.←this has nippon chemicons

i'm not rich, i cant replace everything so will probably be only able to replace obviously bad components :S

so please dont say replace everything... wish i had a tree that grew money :S

gotta love the tubes tho:D its so warm

thanks in advance

Do not use this equipment until you have it checked out by a professional technician ! Because of age and deterioration,  there are potentially fatal electrical and fire hazards present .  Any electrical equipment of this age needs to be closely checked, tested, and deficiencies remedied before being operated.
