SOLD

It is with some melancholy sadness I offer this particular Yamaha HP-3 for sale.

It has been with me throughout most of my Orthodyanmic journey these past few years and survived all the culls iv made, for the reason it has served as my damping reference. It has (i believe) reached the equilibrium damping point, whilst retaining deep bass. Not an easy feat. To me this particular pair is special.

What this translates to is that it has incredible speed and details, and extends well in both directions.

The damping was done by another member Ludoo, and although I tried many different things, I conceded that it was the best as he did it.

This is what me and Ludo refer to as the "bass heavy" Yamaha HP-3, not that its bass heavy now, but rather since Yamaha HP-3 vary a lot in sound, this particular pair is the kind we could damp so specifically, and it is pretty difficult to find it and damp so.

It has also been recabled by Ludo, to a Mogami Miniquad 2893 OFC cable, terminated to a Nuetrik black/gold mini plug. After the Y-split the cable has been sheathed in Cotton, which is nice soft, non microphonic, to go along with the slim flexy cable. I really like this cabling a lot (all credit to Ludo).

Condition:

Its a 30+ year old headphone, so the condition isnt perfect, but overall decent, pads are showing some signs of wear. And a few minor surface scratching on the housing. But its a solid hard wearing headphone in decent condition. And has no smells.

Sound:

Very fast, quite full range extending well both up top and down low. Id say vs my own personal tastes there is a little bit too much treble energy (but to other peoples tastes I have heard them comment its laid back lol), but I usually like much warmer cans than most, so I think they would fit most Head-Fiers tastes in this regard.

To me the detail is amazing and on par or better than most Stax.

The mid's are not overly forward like a Yamaha HP-1 for example.

Whilst visiting a university researcher he took a quick one off measurement of the freq response of these HP-3. Here is the graph. Please note it was his own software setup for research purposes so it might not be the most accurate graph. But it demonstrates the amazing damping job done on these:

I know that was long winded, but I felt this deserved such a descriptive write up! :).

Thanks
