hd25 cables - real differences that are heard?

Thread Starter

Hi, i am interested in how diffferent cables are perceived as giving (night and day) improvements over the stock cable (hd580/600) which is thin enough to fit around the headband and cheap enough to replace if necessary.

Are other cables e.g. hd650 cable, headphile (variations) or others actually able to be heard as improved sound and strong enough to survive portable use.

Any actual expereinces would be helpful (but not of the order of 'the hd650 cable is thicker and therefore must be better variety' only differences actually heard by the writer).

thank you

Are you asking about the effect of the aftermarket cables on a HD25?

Obvious improvements are to be had with an aftermarket cable on the HD25's. Even if you use the stock 650 cable you will be better off. What comes stock with the HD25's doesn't sound great. It is steal and it sounds hard and metallic. Any aftermatrket cable is better than the stock cable.

If you do a search you should find tons of info on this topic. In short: It's very well worth it to upgrade at least to the OPC cable.

Hi magical_mouse

I don't think you are likely to experience a night and day difference by changing the cable on your headphones.

You will certainly read all sorts of reports of people experiencing big differences by changing cables but you have to consider that in Hi Fi auto-suggestion plays a huge role and so it is difficult to assess how real the differences are. Unfortunately people tend not to think they are susceptible to auto-suggestion and do not realise that in hearing auto-suggestion has a massive influence.

I am not saying that cables necessarily all sound the same, but I am saying that to actually improve the fidelity of the reproduction usually there are much better thing to consider.

When you are listening to a CD or any other source with your headphones data is lost in various ways throughout the system. When data is lost it cannot be regained, so if a lot of data is being lost by the source, for example, then that can never be regained no matter how efficient the amplifier or headphones might be.

To improve fidelity then you want to start at the source and work from there to the headphones.

I am using the word "fidelity" because I'm not talking about just changing the sound in some way. You can certainly make changes to the sound anywhere you like in the system but these changes won't be about improving the quality of the sound necessarily, in other words, improving fidelity, rather just managing euphony.

Before investing in cables (above the HD650 which is simply better built), I'd seriously look into the rest of the system.

I found no difference with Cardas and Blue Dragon aftermarket cables on a HD-600 and HD-650.

I'd recommend that you either upgrade other equipment, try a new source (e.g. turntable or a nice radio receiver) or buy more music. All of those give you actual results.
