Recabling HD650 (unbalanced) Help

Thread Starter

I just finished my first DIY project (gamma-2) and wanted to try recabling before building a beta22.  I haven't really had any experience soldering cables but have looked up youtube videos and it doesn't seem too difficult.  Are there any tutorials specifically for making an unbalanced HD650 cables? couldnt find any searching forums.

So far I know i need:

Sennheiser connectors (Cardas for $16?)

Neutrik 1/4" plug (X-series, gold? $5)

~2 feet of heat shrink for the headphone end of the cable(size?)

a thicker heat shrink for the part of the cable that splits for left and right channel

10 ft of 4x24 cable + 10 ft matching size tech flex

I'm trying to keep under $100.  I could go for a 5-6 ft cable instead if it saves money.

Any suggestion for parts and websites? Thanks

Hmm, not that I know of but don't worry. Building cables is pretty straight forward and I always encourage everyone to try it. The harders part will be to solder on the Senn connectors as they're pretty small and it;s easy to burn the plastic. Some people like to use flux.

You will indeed need some Senn connectors and the ones from Cardas are both cheap and of good quality. As for wire I would get Mogami or something similar (try searching locally for OFC, they're probably all the same quality) and I think your chosen plug is a sound one. FWIW I want my connectors to be goldplated because of looks and gold is better for wear. I would get a bit more heat shrink if you want to cover the leads to the headphones and also get some adhesive heatshrink to make your "y".
