Grado SR80/125 and DAC

This is my first post on the forum so I would like to say "Hi" to all people, who kindly decided to read this thread. Now its time to go to the point: I am looking for a DAC. I am able to spend ~100-200GBP for it (~200 only in case if it has AMP). It will be best if the DAC has some integrated amplifier as well since I would not have to buy a separate one. I want the sound to be dark and with a big amount of bass or maybe even slightly muddy. Why? Simply because I am going to pair such DAC with Grado SR80 or SR125, which I personally find to bright (but I like anything else in their sound). In fact I do not need something very bassy but something that will make these grados sound less agressive at the higher frequencies, which sometimes become painful to my ears.

Another option is buying separate DAC and AMP. In such cas I am able to spend ~200GBP for both. The requirements are the same - I need to make Grados sound darker.

OK. I said I need some dark/bassy/muddy etc. DAC. Now it's time to let you know what my general preferences are. I like analog, musical sound. It will be good if the DAC (or AMP if separate) will have warm, relaxing sound. And... thats all. Could you help me? Thank you in advance!

(BTW: which of the grados (80/125) have better soundstage? I could not compare them directly against each other so I am slightly unsure)

Hello and welcome to Head-Fi!

In response to your last question, the 125s would definitely have a better soundstage, although lower end Grados are not known for having a big soundstage. I own both the SR-80is and SR-225is and I can say the 225s definitely beat the 80s in soundstage and transparency. A good amp will also increase the soundstage of both. As for which amp and DAC, I'll probably leave that to other, more experienced people. (I only own the Headroom Total Bithead, a budget amp/DAC.)

Thanks for quick response. I think about modding Grado SR80 (or SR125 but I assume they have same sized cans) earpads so that they are better. Could you messure how wide the headphones are at the point where earpads are 'connected' to the cans? I need to check if earpads from my old ATH-SJ5 will be suitable for them.:D

Here is a picture of a Grado driver without the earpads. I measured the width of the SR-80i earpad fixture area to be a tad more than 1cm. Same with the SR-225i driver. I would think the 125s would be similar as well.

What about the diameter of the can? How long is it?

I have read a bit more about Grado headphones and I think SR60 will suit better to me. Are the cans of SR60 same size as the SR80 ones?

OK I finally decided I will buy Grados SR60 no matter if I can modfy the earpads or not. The thing is I am not going to buy it know... but later. Now I will buy HD595 and some DAC as these are better all rounders I think. I will then buy Grados for some specific types of music like rock.

Now the question is what DAC should I buy? I will buy HD595 for ~£120 so I am left with ~£150 for DAC (although I can strach the budget if it's worth paying more). The DAC does not have to have AMP, which I will buy later with Grados to improve the whole audio system. So what would you suggest? I like warm and musical sound. I thought of MF V-DAC - is there anything better in similar price range?

Also - would DAC for ~150GBP sound better than similarly priced (might be used one) CD Player?

(Also I can buy PCI sound card if you think it will give better sound)

Can anyone answer questions from my last post? I am quite deperate to get better audio quick because I can't stand my HD448 anymore.:E

(It's because I went some day to test some bette headphones and now HD448 sound stunningly flat to me:()

BTW: Are SR60i exactly the same size as SR80i?

(I was told that) The SR-60's are just the SR-80's drivers that didn't meet strict quality control standards . . . so yes, they are EXACTLY the same (with the subtle exception of the ear-pads and a "6" instead of an "8" on the can casing)
