K501 Appreciation Thread (rejuvenated) - Page 3

For me, the K501 pads are lighter and cooler and therefore more comfortable.  It's the K701's headband that really made them uncomfortable for me, giving me what I can only describe as a chronic, low level noogie.

Sonically, the K701 pads take something vital away from the K501, making them sound congested and honky compared to the K501 pads.  I didn't like the K501 pads on the K701, either; making them sound tinny and brittle.

Thanks pataburd.

Well the problem Im having with the k701's are the earpads are too firm and they create pressure spots around my ear instead of evenly distributing the force. Im trying to figure out if the K501's are just as firm or if they have a little more give?

Because the K501 are lighter, I didn't notice as much pressure as I did with the K701.  The K501 pads are not "veloured" (they have a sort of mesh cloth cover) and are not as thick/dense as the K701 pads

Thanks for a great thread. Pulled out my K501 and it sure sounds great :)

After reading this thread, I suddenly regret selling them (I thought they were redundant since I have two pairs of the k500)...

I know what you mean.  Last night I listened to Cat Stevens' "Tea for the Tillerman" with the K501 and DV336SE.  The 8th track, "Into White" got multiple spins.  The vocals and acoustic strings were served up beautifully.

I've never heard the K500, but I know some head-fiers who prefer them to the K501.  What would you say are the chief sonic differences between the two?

How is the K601 ? Between the K501 and the K701 sonically ? Some say it is more natural than the K701.

I might get a K501.

Nobody has mentioned the 601 -- is that the replacement of the 501? I'm curious how they compare -- how they are supposed to (according to the manufacturer) and what the user perceptions are here.

Actually, the "varimotion" was first employed in the K301/401/501, while the older K300/400/500 series doesn't have it. I'd rather say the problem, if there is indeed one (I haven't heard the K601/701), is Harman.

I've had the K500 first, and after 15 months of serious use they developed a weird (and slight) frequency dependent channel imbalance, or perhaps it was there all along and I hadn't noticed it before. I moved on to the K501 and heard more bass, more relaxed sound (less congested mids) and less sparkle in the highs (which I perceived as a drawback). Some people reported almost exactly the opposite. I'm inclined to believe  the various versions of the same headphone (at least in the K501's case) account for greater sound differences than different models (K500 vs. K501)! If you think it's totally abnormal, then I agree with you, but I think this is how things really are.

My K501s are the bass heavy version I think, with 3 holes in the baffle instead of 6, and I bought it new in 1998.

I think everybody writing about the sound of AKG headphones should do his/her best to provide the reader with all the information that could help identify as well as possible which version of the respective headphone is being described.

Mine, too, are the "bass heavy" version, produced at the tail end of K501 production, purchased in 2007.

I was young to headphones & believed that newer must be better.. The 701 was AKG's flagship.. They must be better & superior.. So now, ofcourse, my favorite closed headphone is older then god..

X2.. I'm still stuck in the fabulous 50's..

IMO the verimotion is akin to the difference between the HD650 and HD600.  Some prefer one over the other, but it is clearly not a black and white improvement- technologically or sonically.

Heya Pat, I am wondering if I should get the K240 Sextet... were you able to compare the K501 against it - impressions please? TIA.

Very different.  They both have great mids, but the K501 is all about air and space, and the Sextett is all about tone and body.  Hmmm sounds like a commercial for some fancy ab workout machine.  The sextett would be a good name for one of those too.

Darn it, I'm more intrigued than before :D Thanks for the reply.
