Matrix Mini-i VS iBasso D4

Thread Starter

Hello, everyone.

I'm thinking of upgrading iBasso D4 to Matrix Mini-i.

I'll use it as DAC-amp combination.

I have some questions.

1) Is this upgrade worth money? (Here, I have to plus about $130 from my D4 to used Matrix)

2) Is the Matrix easy to carry around? Weekdays I live at dorm and when the weekends come I go home. I have no problem about carrying D4, but I'm not sure about the Matrix.

I'll use it via USB cable from Macbook Air w/ Amarra.

I listen to classical musics.

Thank you

The Matrix is big-ish, you probably can't throw it into a backpack and take it a home but a weekend bag, a suitcase or a can trunk might work. Nuforce HDP would be more in the backpackable size range if you're so determined. The good old Headamp Pico might be more suitable for you, based on the reputation of its DAC. Of course, if you asked me instead, if I was still in your situation I'd be saving up for a pair of UM Mage rather than trying to squeeze every last bit out of the ES10's.

Addressing the second point, the mini-i is backpackable imo. It would be akin to carrying around an external hard drive that isn't one of the smaller 2.5" drive models.

I agree, the Matrix Mini-i is definitely transportable.  It's not in the "portable" category but it's smaller than a textbook and will fit in a backpack or overnight bag fine.  It also uses a regular powercord so if you're going between home and dorm, you don't need to bring that along either if you have a spare.

X3 on the transportable size issue.
