Recommend me some well recorded country - Page 2

*sigh*

well, GoldBug, it wouldn't hurt High_Q to listen to some and see if he likes it, right?

however, i would venture a guess that he may be thinking of contemporary country music, to be honest.

very vocal-oriented country music, like lady antebellum, or martina mcbride, or faith hill, or keith urban.

or something like that.

i didn't recommend any of those, as they are all recorded with about the same care as popular music.  including brickwalling and auto-tuning.

Actually bluegrass isn't what I am specifically looking for, although I am a fan of the bluegrass genra.  There were some contemporary country musicians that I have heard and their vocals sounded really great, I can't name them, but it made me think mainstream country music has good vocal recordings.  What do you think?

not gonna say i told you so.

sure, there are some contemporary country artists who are well recorded, and who can really wail.

are you thinking male or female vocalists?

I prefer female vocalists, but male is okay too if well recorded.  Goldbug seems to have excusite  taste in music(I like some of his recommendations), so recommendations by him, I would seriously would consider it.

okay, here are some albums that i think are really good records, that also happen to meet the criteria of being new-ish country, female vocalists, and well recorded for good headphone listening.

rosanne cash - black cadillac

shelby lynn - i am shelby lynn

trisha yearwood - inside out

kathy mattea - coal

kasey chambers and shane nicholson - rattlin' bones

i would steer you away from the sort of carrie underwood influenced stuff ("nashville sound" and the like), as it has become plagued, as i mentioned, with auto-tuning and compression.

i'm not saying carrie isn't a good singer.  you're just not going to hear the fidelity in her records that you'd like, that's all.

for guys, i gotta give a nod to vince gill, whose 90's albums are supremely well recorded.

and he has just a lovely tenor.

You guys are great, thanks for the recommendations.  Keep them coming if you have favorites you want to share.  And I thought Diana Krall was all that...  There are some amazing country stuff.  Don't be shy to recommend me some contemporary mainstream stuff too.

My HD650 and I are very appreciative of her music.  Although after listening to her music, her flavor is a bit distant from mainstream country.

"Birmingham, Birmingham - finest city in Alabam.  There ain't no place like Birmingham."

Randy Newman wasn't C&W either, but he caught the spirit.  I like the South.

they're from that hard-to-categorize group of vocalists that also includes patsy cline and roy orbison.

If you like female vocals and are looking for some female contemporary country artists, check out:

Mary Chapin Carpenter-Time*Sex*Love-a fabulous album and recording (in my top 25)

Allison Krauss-Forget About It-OK..covers of popular music done with a country/bluegrass flair but stunning sonics and a great voice to boot.

Sugarland-Enjoy the Ride

I also think early Linda Ronstadt was ahead of her time for contemporary country artists....check out Heart Like a Wheel or Simple Dreams..before Stevie Nicks has Waddy Wachtel on Guitar..Linda Ronstadt had him...."when will I be loved is a precursor to the edge of seventeen sound......

On a different note...if you want a great female vocalist and a great band, check out Amanda Marshall's self titled album...stellar....

Wow.  Her music is recorded so well, my HD650 likes very much. Also, liking Merle Haggard alot(I can't identify with his lyrics, but guitar and his voice are recorded very well). And, Skip, Hop & Wobble is right down my alley.  Just the fact that country has such honest recordings makes me a new fan.
