I've used them for both TV and active listening and they sound great for both.

 

Like tmars said, they work great for TV based usage.  They are nearfield monitors, so expecting THX movie theater explosions is out of the question, however they do make a whole world of difference vs. internal speakers.  You may have to bump up the volume and change the bass/treble settings, but that's not really an issue.

Can anyone suggest an amp for the AV40s?  Or would it not provide anything whatsover?

An amp is not required there active not passive speakers they already 1 have built-in.
